On Capitol Hill, the debate over guns in bars has turned into a raging battle that is not only political, but also personal.
Jimmy Naifeh used to be a darling of gun supporters and used his clout as House Speaker to pass or kill legislation. But when Naifeh used questionable maneuvers to send the current gun bill back to a subcommittee, the gun lobby came out blazing.
"Our legislation is about good guys. The bad guys are already carrying [guns] in bars and restaurants. This would put us on a level playing field, said Darren LaSorte, National Rifle Association.
Naifeh says he likes guns and has 5 or 6 pistols and 5 or 6 rifles. He argued heatedly that the gun bill is a law enforcement nightmare and blasted the National Rifle Association for threatening to wage a campaign against him.
I'm a target of the NRA and I guess I'm a target because I don't take to their threats, said Naifeh.
Naifeh could have voted in subcommittee, but didn't have to because there were enough votes to shoot it down.
Thursday on the Internet, Naifeh was in the bulls eye of bloggers and others on the chat circuit. TeamGOP, a grassroots Republican organization, blasted Naifeh's stance saying "publicly proving what a weasel he really is" according to their news release.
At SayUncle.com, one writer says "Naifeh won. How do we get this guy impeached?"
On Thursday Naifeh reminded folks the NRA used to love him and defended his efforts.
"Because I am against a bill over 80 percent of people and 85 percent of people in my district are opposed to, they come out after me, said Naifeh.
He also pointed out many of the same lawmakers who want to allow guns in bars voted to ban guns from the halls of legislative plaza where they work.
Dozens of lawmakers have signed on to cosponsor the gun bill so theoretically the sponsor could try to bypass the subcommittee and bring the bill up for a floor vote. But Representative Curry Todd would need a two-thirds vote to win -- a tough thing to do without the support of house leaders.
Late Thursday afternoon, Representative Todd told Channel 4 News that he still has the option to resurrect the bill, but he hasn't decided whether to try that before the session ends this spring.
No naifeh you area target becasue you area total political whore that wants to get a lewinsky from sarah brady and to hell with the constitution or the LIVES of your constituence

i was goingot put it in parentheses but forgot this story is taking place in tennesee
That's a weird statement. I know exactly how many handguns, rifles and shotguns I own. Doesn't every gun owner?
The only reason folks are against it is because they have believed the anti's rhetoric, and fail to understand that the bad guys are gonna carry regardless of the law. The same thing happens here in VA every year when we try to get this stupid prohibition removed. The left phrases their attack in terms like; "they want to allow guns in bars", and "guns and alcohol don't mix", and the sheeple go for it every time.
Not off the top of my head, no.I'd have to take a moment to get an exact count. They're all in a safe in my basement.
This guy fits the common pattern of the modern-day gun-grabber, though -- he plays the victim card while attempting to engender kinship with those he would opress by feigning gun ownership.
Once again proving that the real idealogy behind his actions are "guns for me, but not for thee".
Thanks for the pings, btw. I've been rather busy of late, and am not able to keep up with the goings-on here at FR. Keep 'em coming, though, FP32 -- I hope to get caught up one of these days!
This bill would allow Tennessee CCW permit holders to carry their gun into resturants like Appleby's which serves booze as long as the permit holder did NOT drink. There is a high risk of having your piece stolen out of your car/truck/van.
This restriction has always struck me as a typical watering-down of CCW laws just to get them passed, with the idea that it can be strengthened later. Let's work towards making this happen!
I guess they'd rather have criminals arm themselves by stealing guns from cars parked at restaurants.
A similar law passed here in AZ - then our Baroness, er Governor vetoed it. She's gotta go.

I'd be a little ambiguous in answering, since I have a pistol which doesn't work and I have no present intention of repairing. Should it be included in my 'tally'?
