On a day of carnage, it was an intimate image: a soldier clutching a child in his arms.
When Amy Bieger, mother of three boys, wife of an infantryman in Iraq, saw the picture on the Internet on Tuesday night, she stared at the little feet dangling in the nook of the man's arm, at the soldier's helmeted head pressed to the child's face. She stared and tears welled up.
"I said 'Oh my God, it is one of our soldiers,'" Bieger, 34, said yesterday from her home outside the Fort Lewis, Wash., Army post. "Then I stared at the [name] patch. I made out the rank and then the last four letters of the name and I knew it was my husband."

I can't tell you how I cried when I made it last night. Cutting the baby and soldier from their background had to be done oh so carefully, it was like I was holding and caressing them myself. So, so, sad.
I'd like to use this on Sunday's Chaplain thread.
Please let me know when you are done.
Thank You
There is an Lj in the corner???
Wow, I can't see that at all.
I can imagine how that must have been upsetting cropping that photo. I have trouble looking at it, let alone trying to do the enhancements you did.
GREAT job and THANK YOU!
I think that was a wonderful tribute you made.
I tell ya, Star, I haven't merged my layers by mistake like that since I started doing graphics and am pretty deflated from it.
I poured crocodile tears coercing those two out of their background and now have to do it again. It is cropping around those little feet that kills.
Hey, hey hey!!! It was your idea, Cal! Get any more ideas like that and you can count me in!
Will ping you when the graphic is finalized later today.
I left work early two days in a row because that photo is so damnably disturbing; I have a daughter about the same age as that girl appears to be.
I feel a chaotic blend of deep sorrow and inexpressible rage. Sorrow for the girl and her family; rage that I must share a planet with minds so evil as to be capable of such atrocity. I only wish I had the opportunity to go kill off a bunch of them in person.
"Vessels appointed for destruction," may they burn eternally in unholy flaming Hell with their spiritual Father, Satan.
