Reward Offered in Attack on Elderly Woman

Washington (AP) - D.C. police are calling it a brutal beating that no one should have to experience.

Investigators are trying to determine who attacked and robbed an 83-year-old woman Tuesday in the city's Foggy Bottom neighborhood. It happened about 4:30 p.m. on the 1700 block of 24th Street, Northwest.

Commander Robert Contee says the woman, who is a vendor in the area, suffered injuries to her nose, eyes and head - and may have broken bones. She's hospitalized in stable condition.

Police caught the attack on tape, and are asking the public to help identify the attacker. They're offering a reward of $10,000.

Authorities say the attack appeared to be unprovoked. It's not clear whether the woman was targeted.

It may have been unclear when this report was filed earlier today, but I saw the local CBS affiliate report that the woman was a street vendor of Greek decent who sold umbrellas and t-shirts to tourists. A security camera recorded the entire incident, and the news report showed clips of the attack. Her attacker, that piece of human debris, kicked her while she lay on the ground. I'm betting that the attacker knew she had money.

Pray for that poor old Greek lady, and let's hope that scumbag gets caught.

I just saw this on our local news. Appalling!

I think the video can be enhanced to get a better description of the perp.

It was only a 30 sec clip, but yes.

I think it should be national news. He assaulted her w/ a brick. And did you see him kick her when she was down?

It looked unprovoked. He could've just taken the money and ran w/out going to such extremes. If this were my mother or grandmother, I'd be out for blood.

Where was Mike Tyson? That was his MO as a kid but he would sucker punch old women who had their hands full of groceries in a small elevator.

One good reason for elderly or vulnerable not to be alone in DC even in daylight in "good" neighborhoods.

I live in VA but we couldn't carry in DC anyway.
This was a broad daylight thing and cowardly at that. I surely hope they catch him. Funny thing is since they are so against guns (because all the riff raff has them) they will bust a gut to find this guy.

The area in which this attack took place is too "good" and too "prime" to risk not sticking someone with the thing.

is the address correct? They said 1700 block of 24th St., which would put the location near the intersection of 24th and Connecticut Ave., between DuPont Circle and the Naval Observatory ("Get out of CHeney's House"). However, the video showed scenes from Foggy Bottom/GWU Metro Station. I wonder if they meant 700 block rather than 1700 block?

Here's another link, from the Washington Times:
http://www.washtimes.com/metro/20050504-093417-1001r.htm

They mention Potomac Plaza Terrace apartment building, and that scene IS near The George Washington University (GWU).

Potomac Plaza Terraces Inc
730 24th St Nw
Washington, DC 20007

So the WJLA account was wrong, it IS 700 block not 1700 block.

It is indeed near GWU and Foggy Bottom metro and the scumbag has been caught. As usual, he has a rap sheet longer than the Potomac river although police are downplaying the obvious question - why was he out on the street. "Grandmom" as she is known around here is still recovering.

Stories on the arrest and arraignment of said scum bag are at here for a limited time (Post usually archives stuff after a few weeks):
