STAFFORD, Texas (AP) - A former Democratic congressman announced Wednesday that he will try to win the seat held by Republican House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who has been hounded by allegations of ethics violations.
"We need leaders with a high standard of accountability to the public; who will recognize that there is only one standard for ethical behavior," Nick Lampson told reporters gathered on the front lawn of his aunt's house in suburban Houston.
Although Lampson peppered his remarks with comments about an ethics controversy DeLay is facing, he claimed he would focus on his record from four terms in Congress and his knowledge of the district's needs.
"This shouldn't be a shouting match between who's right and who's left," he said. "I believe others are going to be shouting."
Lampson said he has begun to raise money from Republicans and Democrats for what he estimates will be a $5 million campaign.
National Democrats have long ignored the district, but questions about DeLay's fundraising techniques and lobbyist-financed travel have sparked interest in the 2006 race.
DeLay has represented the district since 1984. His office did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press.
Lampson represented an adjacent district until redistricting that DeLay engineered cost him enough Democratic voters that he lost to Republican Ted Poe in 2004. But Lampson said that about 120,000 of his former constituents now live in DeLay's district.
Also considering a run for the Democratic nomination is Houston City Councilman Gordon Quan, a Chinese-American immigration lawyer who hopes to capitalize on the district's growing Asian population. Quan also did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
Now he stands before the cameras and actually claims that he is going to "move" to Stafford to run in this race. Give me a break. He also stood before the cameras during the 04 elections and actually made the claim that he voted MORE in line with the Catholic church's teachings than most Republican Catholics in Congress. This was after he was one of several Catholic politicians who were targeted for their stances on abortion.
All anyone needs to know is that Nick Lampson is a former Jefferson County, TX tax collector who represented one of the MOST liberal districts in the nation. The 9th Congressional district was represented by Jack Brooks for many many years, and is still heavily influenced by unions. It is one of the only blue areas left in TX. Lampson is seen front and center in the famous Clinton photo-op on the day of impeachment. He has voted numerous times to decrease abortion restrictions. He is a sleazy politician and will fail miserably. This reminds me of Florida when the dems and Terry McAuliffe put everything they had in defeating Jeb Bush in '02. Jeb is still Governor, and Delay will still be Majority Leader in January of '07.
Yep. In spite of that bogus poll that was put out to the public last week.
Well then you ought to Check out Galvestoncountygop.com Their chairman and many others in their executive committee has been busting their tail to defend delay.
Bring it on is right. Give 'em he**, Tom!!Here's an in your face pic for the Liberal
lyin' jerks trying to smear Delay!
When Lampson was tax assessor/collector he was known for getting his acquaintances to make deals that he knew about because of information he had. He used names of friends and they split the profits. I know a guy who lived in Beaumont and refused such a "deal" with Lampson
thats great work, Meek !
Thank you. :)
Count me in! Had fun helping Ted Poe eject Slick Nick last fall, and this is just too good to pass up.
I was amazed about by how aggressive Nicki was on our turf last year, so no one should write this off. Rather, we should all enjoy jumping in and giving him one more big a$$ kicking.
On your point about the gloves coming off, I think Nicki's many awards and praise from the (Sodomite)Human Rights Campaign should come into play. Ever been to this site: http://www.liberallampson.com/ ?
Keyes actually had people looking at one of our new CD's last year, and got the message that carpetbaggers aren't well thought of down here, even if they're conservative.
Peter Wareing, Phil Sudan, and numerous other conservative Republicans in Texas can testify to that. Just imagine the anger towards a liberal carpetbagger.
Has anyone found out how much Soros money this guy has accepted?
I live in the 22nd district and Lampson will be a tough competitior. He is a very conservative dem.
