Pakistan 'catches al-Qaeda chief' (#3, not bin Laden)
BBC ^ | May 4, 2005

Posted on 05/04/2005 4:48:08 AM PDT by alnitak

Senior Libyan al-Qaeda suspect Abu Faraj al-Libbi has been arrested in Pakistan, the government says.

Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said the suspect had been caught earlier in the week.

He would give no details of the arrest. Other reports said two suspects were captured in the Waziristan region of North West Frontier Province on Monday.

Libbi is said to have become third in the al-Qaeda hierarchy after Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was caught in 2003.

He is wanted in connection with two attempts on the life of Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf.

More details soon.

That passport photo makes me think he's pretty handy with make up.

Maybe he has a double and the double was captured before the transformation was complete. Lol!!

It was nice of President Musharaf to give the biggest loser in American electoral politics a job. Maybe Musharaf can give George McGovern, the second biggest loser (McGovern never lost an election in Massachusetts, while Mondale lost in all 50 states), a job as well. : )

"Interesting that the worst of the worst get captured alive."

I was thinking the same thing. None of the terrorist leaders have taken their own lives rather than be captured.

And nobody better say, "it's against Islam to commit suicide", because killing innocents is supposed to be too.

I have to admit Saddam's sons went down fighting.

What a day to be away from the TV and computer!!! I just now found out about this story.

The scorecard is updated, at least for al-Libi.

WHY does the military announce this crap? The news media is telling EVERYONE that this guy is talking. WHY do we have to announce this? It is ruining the chances to capture other people. I just don't get it. I wish they could keep this stuff a secret.

Maybe he isn't saying a word but the military says he is so that OBL gets nervous.

Can't take the chance that this info is correct and just sit still.

So OBL is forced to move and during the time he is moving he is the most vulnerable. Most likely to be spotted or stopped.

"The coded messages deciphered recently have revealed to us that he was not only co-ordinating pre-election terrorist acts in the US, but had sent several messages to several militants in the UK in the last eight to 10 months . . ."

Ok, did I miss the terror attacks here, were they downplayed, did DHS capture the wanta be terrorists, or did the terrorists get cold feet?

Batchelor talking about this - says he talked with Bodansky, who says they have been monitoring this guy for a while - but they moved on him now because they fear a major operations is planned for Europe - and they wanted to nab him to really put the screws to him to find out what is going on.

IMO UBL could be tending his rose bushes in a little house in Paris...NO-body is looking for him there! Hiding in plain sight is often the most difficult to find.

Thank you. I posted the scorecard earlier before it was updated.

Notice the spellings I've seen today:

FNC - Abu Farraj Al-Libbi / and the scorecard - Abu Faraj al-Liby (Abu Faraj al-Libi).

Understandable how these @#$%*&%^ are hard to keep track of in a database...

I'll bet the CIA will have this guy's nuts in a vice faster than you can say 'Jack Robinson'. This skunk definitely knows something and now is not the time to get in a twist over what the NYT and alphabet networks think. This piece of human debris needs to be talking and I don't care what they do to make it happen.

I can understand where you are coming from with regard to the "hiding in plain sight" reasoning - However, no way whatsoever with regard to being in "Paris" -

UBL is ekking out a survival in the Pak border region (or was for at least the first year after Sept 11th) - He possibly has tried to move to a more hospitable location (City in Pakistan) -
