Michelle Malkin: I'm No South Park Conservative
The National Ledger ^ | May 4, 2005 | Michelle Malkin

Posted on 05/03/2005 10:06:52 PM PDT by Coastal

I'll get to First Lady Laura Bush's bawdy stand-up routine in a minute. But I want to highlight a related new book out about how young conservatives are shaking up the dominant liberal media culture. It's called "South Park Conservatives." My name is listed on the cover along with many other (mostly) right-leaning pundits, websites, and bloggers, but I must confess to having mixed feelings about the honor.

The best-selling book's author, Brian C. Anderson of the Manhattan Institute, writes a fun, breezy survey documenting the rise of talk radio, FOX News, the Internet, conservative publishing, and college Republican activism. Anderson's chapter on the success of conservative talk radio and the abysmal failure of liberal Air America to replicate it is incisive. Another chapter on the blogosphere (alone worth the price of the book)

We're not supposed to have our moral compass set by the 1960s anti-Bible crew that launched this unseemly avalanche.

Nor should we have it readjusted every time we turn around by Bible-thumping pinheads with their collars buttoned too tight, their shirts stuffed too far, and their underwear starched daily.

Thank you Michelle, you still know and have a love for decency. Too many have lost their sense of decency and crave depravity of all kinds. Today it seems like humor is thought to be how shocking and disgusting one can be. Most people have been so steep in depraved humor they have cannot see it for what it is or what enjoying it says about themselves. We should long for purity and decency not cheap degrading thrills in different forms. We should think first, what would Jesus do. Would he watch what we are watching and is he pleased that we are. It is up to us to train our appetites and seek that which is pleasing to God. We will find true joy then. Everlasting pleasure is at the right hand of God.

Did you read her book on that yet?

She made the case crystal clear that we were right to do just that!

Michelle receives a huge thumbs down from me. I can do without a female version of Michael Savage, thank you very much.

When you think we're attacking Christians, we find it very frustrating because we feel we're attacking whackjob needlebutts. Not all Christians are whackjob needlebutts, and I resent the association.

Oh, brother.

Take a step back and look at yourself. "...we feel we're attacking whackjob needlebutts." What are "whackjob needlebutts," and why do you feel so impelled to "attack?"

This seems to be a trait of some people (not all) who are devotees of what I call junk comedy: When they laugh out loud at something someone like me finds revolting, and we might say so, they are angry at us for not finding it funny!

The prime example is that of South Park, but there were even people on FR who applauded the lifeless losers who would dupe TV anchors into putting them on the air during live coverage of Columbine, JFK Jr's plane crashing, and Princess Diana's deadly accident so they could promote Howard Stern.

As for Christians, there are people on this thread (who know who they are) that have gone insane since the Schiavo situation (when they were callously referred to as Nazis), and are ready to drop trou and start a pissing contest whenever they detect anything that resembles "right-wing" Christian attitudes.

"The First Lady resorting to horse masturbation jokes"

"A ridiculous statement, no matter who makes it."

Oh man, Michelle has gone to a place the First Lady would never even think about going. Over-anylizing is an understatement in this case. Still love Michelle though even when she gnaw's on a sapling and misses the forest around her.

I can't help but wonder if the "South Park Conservative" movement in the Republican party won't mean a swell for the Constitution Party.

Puh-leeze. Those guys are washouts even by third-party standards (i.e. they don't just lag far behind the Big Two; they lag behind halfway-organized third parties like the Libertarians and Greens).

Precisely.

This is a classic example of one of the harms done by abusive and overreaching government -- it discredits even the most reasonable and legitimate efforts toward the same end. In this case, the fact that there are people who want outright censorship discredits people who simply dislike vulgar entertainment. (Of course, there's also the fact that many of us don't believe that the First Lady's joke were, in fact, vulgar, but that's a separate issue.)

They come in with nasty remarks, challenging the ability of fans of the show to be A) Conservatives and B) Christians.

I won't be vicious, but I gotta say what little I have seen of southpark is 100% incompatible with Christianity. If you find people mocking Jesus and His message to be humorous, if perversity and vulgarity amuse you, you have missed the whole point of Christianity.

No one can thumb his nose at God, live in rebellion and be saved. If you think otherwise, you might want to spend some time reading the bible.

Well she's right that South Park is vulgar. So what? It's far more than that, South Park is extremely clever satire which skewers its targets perfectly. The vulgarity is not gratuitous, it hugely enhances the sense of ridicule.
