WINONA, Minn. -- After all the radio interviews, after all the newspaper stories and television stories and hundreds and hundreds of e-mails, Carrie Rethlefsen ended her lesson in free speech and democracy today by doing a simple thing:
She walked into school with her "I [heart] My Vagina" T-shirt's message in plain sight. About 40 classmates had walked in just seconds before after turning their T-shirts inside out.
And, minutes later, she emerged with another lesson learned. The administrators at Winona Senior High School mean what they say. They sent her home for the day.
"I'm happy," said Rethlefsen, 18. "I got my message out there."
What began as a simple act of defiance -- she wore a "I [heart] My Vagina" button to school to raise awareness about violence against women, even after officials told her not to -- evolved into a platform to talk about women's rights, the fight against violence and freedom of speech that she couldn't have imagined two weeks ago.

The College of Education welcomes two new associate professors of education, Rhea Walker and Ann Rethlefsen. Walker received her Ph.D. degree in philosophy from Iowa State University in Ames and has years of teaching experience in higher education. She came to WSU from Iowa State University as a consultant/lecturer. Walker enjoys working with students and seeing the learning process through their eyes.
Ann Rethlefsen received her Ed.D. degree in leadership from Saint Mary's University of Minnesota. Rethlefsen was a teacher on special assignment for the College of Education at Winona State University for four years. She's excited to officially be a WSU faculty member.
"I love teaching," said Rethlefsen. "I feel I have a lot to contribute to education students, and its so wonderful to be a part of their learning process."
I was leafing through the lettuce when I spotted and heard two men doing the same. I only had to listen for about 5 seconds before I realized that they were two flaming pooftah's.
I swung my cart around just in time to see one of the two guy's tee-shirts. In large letters was the legend, "No One Knows I'm Gay."
I laughed all the way home.
I hope the boys don't give her a hard time. If tbey finger her as an outcast they can be pretty rough. Coming from a young girl this situation can have a long-term effect.
damn! he's flashing "the shocker"!

Lack of coverage
By Ann Rethlefsen, Winona
When I learned that the Winona Daily News would not cover the Southeast Minnesota Regional Science Fair on March 4, I was shocked. More than one person who contacted the newspaper was told that the local science fair was covered, so there would be no further coverage of science events. The newspaper's policy was to only cover the local fair.
This is most dismaying, particularly when I read about the same athletic teams doing the same event multiple times. I certainly believe it is appropriate to cover those events each time they play. You even covered the Battle of the Bands on two different days. Why would a science fair be any different? What causes you to create a policy to exclude the academic area of science? This seems to send a negative message about some of our academic programs.
More than 130 students competed in this event from across Southeast Minnesota. They, too, deserve coverage for their hard work and efforts. Many students spend hundreds of hours working on their projects.
There were numerous award winners, as you must realize from the faxed results you received. The Army, the Navy, the Air Force, as well as numerous other groups presented or donated awards for the student projects. There were winners of the paper presentations who advance to the Tri-State Symposium. Thirty-two students advance to the State Science Fair. Two senior high school projects advanced to the International Science and Engineering Fair the Olympics of science with more than 1,200 high school students from around the world participating. One of the winners at the regional fair is making her fourth appearance at ISEF. Two of our local businesses are major supporters of the regional, state and international events, and they deserve recognition for their financial assistance: Ticona Celstran and Fastenal. Year after year, they contribute financially to support these important events. They wholeheartedly support science education and research.
I hope that in the future you give credence to academics as well as sports for our young students. They all work hard and deserve recognition for their efforts.
It is not polite to post here. http://emptv.com/images/shocker.jpg
In WI they force kids to take these kinds of crap classes
even in the Tech schools...
There is no escaping the Marxist secular humanist propaganda
unless you are home schooled and then are fortunate to go
to private schools...
I would tell my kids to go into math and and hard sciences
or become machinists..and avoid the humanities like the plague they truly are..
... what, like financially? Or is the extent of the support putting up signs?
Time for someone to Put up a sign that says ... "I am IGBLT, and all I got out of this community is stupid purple signs"
... and a t-shirt is needed too: "I am her vagina, and all she did for me is make this lousy t-shirt"
I'd really like to see a picture of her! My bet would be that she's plain as a barn door, 100 or more pounds overweight, sweats profusely and always carries a bottle (one liter) of some diet drink. She'd be one of those females who needs to remind others that she's got the basic equipment because she knows that no one would voluntarily go there to find out. She'll also be one of the first to complain about a "sexually hostile environment" should she ever get a job and then find that some techie out in the shop has an Playboy calendar.
She's gonna have to. Nobody else will.
she'll be sad to learn everyone there is just like her so she won't get the attention she got in Winona.
(sniff, sniff...glory days)
I wonder how supportive she'd be of free speech if some male classmate wore a shirt saying "I [heart] Winona's vagina too."
I meant "I [heart] Carrie's vagina too"
I love my cock! (Imagine picture of rooster right below). Now that wouldn't be offensive to those feminazi's would it? It's all about equal treatment right sister?
