Schools reverse sex-ed policy
The Washington Times ^ | 5-3-05 | Jon Ward

A Montgomery County Public Schools spokesman said yesterday that the district will not bar parents from sitting in on a sex-ed course that begins this week, and that they never intended to. "Parents of kids in those classes will be allowed [in]," said spokesman Brian Edwards, contradicting statements he made days before to The Washington Times. In a phone interview Friday, Mr. Edwards, who has been with the school district since November, said "no" when asked whether parents would be allowed to audit the sex-ed classes.

Oh man, I remember those classes. Lame. But regardless, that woulda been so embarrassing to be the kid whose parent(s) sat in on the class!

I remember picking up my daughter from school the day she had her sex ed. First thing she asked me was "Mom, what's an organism?" I said, "Oh my, um, um, um, it feels good?" Was not prepared at all. She was happy with that answer. I don't think she got any of it.

Crystal Pittman, whose son is in 10th-grade at Springbrook, attended a parent-information meeting last week to learn about the curriculum.

"I'm under the impression, even my son is getting the impression, that not only are they going to define homosexuality, they're going to be convincing our youth ... that homosexuality is OK, it's just another choice, and to me that is just so totally and morally wrong," Ms. Pittman said.

screw that whole school system, pull kids and govt money out and shut them down. or get new people to run them

I'm glad we homeschool, although I recognize it's not the best option for a lot of families.

I've been following these threads, and I guess if I were one of the parents, I'd march right in and say,

"I object in the strongest terms to your teaching this curriculum to my son. He will not attend these sessions. Provide other work for him to do during this timeframe, or allow him to pursue independent work in the library."

That way I could protect my child without infringing on the rights of those parents who want their children to learn how to be homosexuals.

My 5th grader just had a sex-ed class in 5th grade at his public school in California.

I was very pleased. They showed video-tapes that were made in the 80's. The teachers stopped it at a point that they were uncomfortable with (masturbation) and the parents agreed.

The teachers let the parents watch the videotapes beforehand.

I was very pleased with everything.

I talked to my son beforehand, and gave him books on the Christian perspective of sex.

I hope sex-ed continues like this in the future. If it does, I'll be okay with it. If not, my son won't participate.

Having your parents sit in on your classes can make for a bad educational environment in some situations.

On the other hand, the parents have a ligitamate concern that schools are teaching things they don't want their kids exposed to.

We really need to give parents choices in where they send their kids to be educated. It's unreasonable to take people's money for education, but only allow them to receive education run by government agencies that are pushing an adgenda rather than educating children.

I like the point you made about parents being able to watch beforehand. That way, they can judge for themselves.

We do that in Cub Scouts. There is a video aimed at informing children on how to avoid molestation. To be honest, it's creepy, even though it is certainly not graphic.

We are required to show it, but we always let parents screen first, encourage them to attend with their son, and we don't make anyone watch it if the parent declines.

It's a very common sense approach. For the record, we declined to allow our son to watch until he was a Bear (third grade).

Having gone through "sex ed" in a Catholic school in the 1980s, all I can say is that it's worse than useless. It encouraged sexual experimentation (which I think is the real purpose of foisting it upon kids as young as 11) and was presented unscientifically and 'values-neutral'--meaning that anal-sex, oral-sex, etc. were presented as co-equal with the procreative act.

This experience has helped convince me that homeschooling is the absolute best option for families that can handle it. There is no way my kids are going through this cr@p.

I remember picking up my 10 year old early for an eye appointment. They send me to the band room where they are having HEALTH........

I look in the classroom window and there's the nurse holding up a tampon telling the girls how to insert it...........this to ten year olds and this at the height of the toxic shock sydrome epidemic.

Man, did I ever throw a fit!!!!

You're not serious. Anal and oral sex were discussed in the classroom in a Catholic elementary school?

Not only in the class-room, but also in a big-assed assembly in the gym--with the nuns around. The same place where the Masses were generally held. It was one of the most perplexing memories from my childhood.

Oh I remember toxic shock. I can't remember the brand name of the tampon that was associated with it. They took it off the market.

My daughter is now 16 and uses pads. She doesn't want to use tampons. I remember when I was young, my mom would get a sample box of the "new" (at that time) o.b tampon w/o the applicator in the mail. I used to drop them in the toilet and watch them bloooom! They fascinated me. Never have used them.
