After 10 years, brain-damaged Buffalo-area fireman makes astounding recovery (Schiavo Parallel?)

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) - Ten years after a firefighter was left brain-damaged and mostly mute during a 1995 roof collapse, he did something that shocked his family and doctors: He perked up.

"I want to talk to my wife," Donald Herbert said out of the blue Saturday. Staff members of the nursing home where he has lived for more than seven years raced to get Linda Herbert on the telephone.

It was the first of many conversations the 44-year-old patient had with his wife, four sons and other family and friends during a 14-hour stretch, said Herbert's uncle, Simon Manka.

"How long have I been away?" Herbert asked.

"We told him almost 10 years," the uncle said. "He thought it was only three months."

Anyway, I wouldn't be surprised if the people on the 'official' nominating committee in Stockholm rely on outside recommendations, and then re-nominate those that look the most outstanding.

And the man was more than just any U.S. Congressman... We have over 400 of those. He was the chairman of the sub-committee on HEALTH. Our nation has only ONE of those. Dr.H did a good job of convincing that chairman of the new treatment's effectiveness, and even brought a recovered patient, Jim McDonie to Washington to meet that Chairman.

Other groups confirmed to the Chairman that Dr. Hammesfahr's work was outstanding, including the Traumatic Brain Injury Association, The Vietnam Veterans of America, The International Police Chiefs Federation, and the American Burn Survival Foundation. The Chairman's letter, was addressed to the entire committee so it would have been proper for any of them for FORWARD the nomination for consideration.
