What I would like to know is why Al Franken and the Hollywood crow was there! From what I understand Rush was not invited.Maybe this is wrong it is just what I heard maybe Rush declined the invitation.

I think someone should tell Laura Bush that she needs to get another writer.Sorry I just didn't see any humor in what she said..Don't get me wrong I love Laura and think she is still a class act but she should have never tried to play to the liberal media or the Hollywood wackos.

Me either. The fact that the NY Times approves is telling.

You are what you do and say. This wasn't any accident.

I suspect Rush Limbaugh knew that some of the material would be offensive to a considerable portion of the conservative audience, including his listener base, and decided not to attend. From what I understand, the 700 Club TV broadcast said nothing about the content of the First Lady's speech. Pat Robertson has been burned a few times by his own impolitic remarks and apparently decided to punt on this one. Bill Bennett did some hand wringing about it on his AM talk show yesterday. Michael Savage decided to go ballistic (surprise!) and use it to hammer at his view of "not a dime's worth of difference" between the two parties.

Did you watch the program? Had you seen previous year's programs? The show is like a celebrity roast and everybody gets zinged. Some years, it's the press, other years, it's the president and most times it's a mix of both. She was not playing to the media or Hollywood, that's the writer's conclusion, she was making fun, which was the purpose of the evening.

Whether it was the media or the Bushs themselves, they have been portreyed as something a lot more than what we saw with Laura...

Talking about Mrs. Cheney slipping dollar bills into the thong type attire of male strippers was a bit of a surprise...And revealing to the world or even joking that George can't stay awake long enough to fullfil her sexual needs was also a surprise...

Wonder if George approved ahead of time this, IMO, humiliating revelation...

Oh goody. The elites praise Laura because her jokes descended into the gutter.BARF!

Thank you, thank you, beth and sauropod for seeing it clearly. (And writing it concisely.)

Some of us here tried to express the same misgivings on other threads in the last couple of days. We got pummeled by the "don't you dare ever criticize 'our' Laura" crowd.

In the process we were told to "lighten up" 253 times; accused of being both prudish and dirty-minded at the same time (LOL); and lectured that we was emotionally and intellectually immature --all because we thought some of those jokes were inappropriate.

I think we all agree that Laura Bush is lovely to look at (hey, loved her dress! what was that? yellow chiffon? though yellow doesn't go too well with blue); and vastly to be preferred over her predecessor.

But fact that the Bush-hating elites are delighted at Laura's performance ought to give the gushing "Laura is perfection personified" crowd a little reality check.

(For a far more harsh take on Laura's shtick than anything I said, see Wlady Pleszczynski's Another Perspective: Milking the Horse.)

Reference your post # 4, second paragraph.

I agree, Beth, I agree.

I thought her jokes were hilarious. I didn't see anything 'naughty' about them, except in the minds of those who have painted themselves a portrait of Mrs. Bush that is not accurate.

The funniest part about her 'routine', was the absurdity of it all. When she told that story about going to Chippendales, and Lynne Cheney now being called "Dollar Bill" by the Secret Service, I just howled laughing!!

Folks need to lighten up. Nothing she said was 'off color' or obscene, and she never resorted to foul language, as many have at this dinner, in the past.

She was poking fun at those who have put her and the President in this little prude box, and can't imagine them having any sort of sense of humor.

The WH press corp member can invite a guest. There's no rules on who they can invite. This isn't open to everyone and the WH has no say in who gets invited. Al and the rest were invited by liberal correspondents.

Rush never goes to those things. I think he said once he had been maybe twice but he hates those events so he never goes.

You dont' understand how the dinner works. The media invite the guests....therefore, frankin-stein, hanoi honda, and left gere etc. were there at their invitation. That should explain it all.

As for Laura she didn't do anything wrong.
She was cool, funny and charming.
She delivered everything with style and grace and of course, that beautiful smile and those sparkling eyes.

If you didn't see any humor in what she said then you must not have a funny bone that can be tickled. She was AWESOME.
