I don't think the NEA and it's teachers deserve out thanks. They deserve condemnation.
Given the current state of public education, this is more propaganda than substance.

Since 1984, National PTA has encouraged all citizens to show their appreciation to teachers during the annual National PTA Teacher Appreciation Week. Each May, Teacher Appreciation Week offers the opportunity for citizens to reaffirm their commitment to parent-teacher partnerships. I am thanking my teachers, including my 10th grade Algebra II teacher who made everyone laugh their way into enjoying quadratic equations and Pre-Calculus, or at least some of us. :)
He also discussed the sorry state of education saying that he believed that public education was set up completely wrong from the beginning, not dissimilar to John Taylor Gatto's writings.
Here's a thought about today's teachers and maybe it will work. If we thank them, they might try to live up to deserving the appreciation. Can't hurt for one day.

National Thank a Private Sector Taxpayer Day is every day that you show up at your local polling place and vote in an election.
That is a day for everybody...taxpayers, non-taxpayers, illegal immigrants, felons etc.
That, and he would probably recommend throwing out the blueprints and the entire formula for mass education.
True, but no one will complain if you personally claim the day as your own and celebrate with an ice cream cake and balloons.
