May 3 is National Teacher Day, a day for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives. While it does take a lot of people to make a school succeed, this day focuses on the teachers who work to make public schools great places for students to succeed in life.
It is celebrated on the Tuesday of the first full week of May, so the actual date varies each year.
We especially dedicate this day to those teachers who are serving in the U.S. military forces. We all wish them a safe and speedy return.
The whole week -- this year May 1-7 -- is designated Teacher Appreciation Week by the National PTA.
This year's theme is "Thank a teacher for making public schools great!"
Wed like to acknowledge and thank the board, staff and volunteers of Teachers Count for their support of America s teachers. Youll find more about this supportive group at www.teacherscount.org
History
The origins of Teacher Day are murky. Around 1944 Arkansas teacher Mattye Whyte Woodridge began corresponding with political and education leaders about the need for a national day to honor teachers. Woodbridge wrote to Eleanor Roosevelt who in 1953 persuaded the 81st Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day.
NEA along with its Kansas and Indiana state affiliates and the Dodge City (Kan. ) local lobbied Congress to create a national day celebrating teachers. Congress declared March 7, 1980, as National Teacher Day for that year only.
NEA and its affiliates continued to observe Teacher Day on the first Tuesday in March until 1985, when the National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week as the first full week of May. The NEA Representative Assembly then voted to make the Tuesday of that week National Teacher Day.

Also a big thanks to John Taylor Gatto.
I don't think the NEA and it's teachers deserve out thanks. They deserve condemnation.
Given the current state of public education, this is more propaganda than substance.
As we celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, May 1-7, 2005, we honor the dedication, passion, and caring nature of teachers. Not only are teachers the backbone of our nations education system, they are a guiding force in helping our children develop into healthy, happy, and successful adults. We pause to reflect on all that teachers do every day, and designate this week in appreciation and celebration of their service. Please join the six million members of PTA in thanking teachers during this weekyour kindness will be appreciated, and its important that we show educators how much they mean to us. Thank you, teachers! Linda Hodge National PTA President |
Since 1984, National PTA has encouraged all citizens to show their appreciation to teachers during the annual National PTA Teacher Appreciation Week. Each May, Teacher Appreciation Week offers the opportunity for citizens to reaffirm their commitment to parent-teacher partnerships. The following is a calendar of publicity and program ideas to prepare you for Teacher Appreciation Week and follow-up ideas to use after Teacher Appreciation Week.

Don't we adequately show our appreciation by electing politicians who raise our property taxes yearly?
What, we're supposed to send flowers, too?
Bullsh!t.
Hehehehe, you summed it up quite nicely.
I am thanking my teachers, including my 10th grade Algebra II teacher who made everyone laugh their way into enjoying quadratic equations and Pre-Calculus, or at least some of us. :)
He also discussed the sorry state of education saying that he believed that public education was set up completely wrong from the beginning, not dissimilar to John Taylor Gatto's writings.
Here's a thought about today's teachers and maybe it will work. If we thank them, they might try to live up to deserving the appreciation. Can't hurt for one day.
Thank you also to
Also thanks to Mr. Y, my Jr. High principal who scared kids with that big wooden paddle which I suspect he never used, but kept it handy and all of us safe.
Thanks to Mr. F. who lifted all of our spirits up by being honest, straight and no nonsense.
You think? ;-)
What should we do for the union organizers?
That would be nice, go to the head of the class!
/tongue in cheek
When is National Thank a Private Sector Taxpayer Day?
Oh you can thank them, too. Union organizers would probably appreciate sincere thank yous very much, along with flower bouquets, gift certificates and free movie tickets. /rolling eyes with much sarcasm
Ben Franklin was a prime mover for "public schools". If he were here today to view the monster he helped create, I think he would be for starting over again.
Boston Blackie, you made that question entirely too easy.
National Thank a Private Sector Taxpayer Day is every day that you show up at your local polling place and vote in an election.
That is a day for everybody...taxpayers, non-taxpayers, illegal immigrants, felons etc.
That, and he would probably recommend throwing out the blueprints and the entire formula for mass education.
True, but no one will complain if you personally claim the day as your own and celebrate with an ice cream cake and balloons.
Spoken like a true payroll patriot
