TV evangelist Joyce Meyer and her family have received millions in salary and benefits from her worldwide ministry in recent years, according to newly released records.

The documents, obtained by the Post-Dispatch under Missouri's Open Records laws, provide the first public look at how the worldwide broadcasting and publishing empire has compensated Meyer and her family.

They paint a picture of a minister and her family who have reaped large financial rewards from the ministry they created and control. Over 20 years, Joyce Meyer Ministries of Fenton has grown to a $90 million-a-year empire with TV and radio programs that reach millions of people in about 70 countries.

Among the details included in the financial statements, board minutes and other documents Meyer provided to the assessor of Jefferson County in a dispute over the tax-exempt status of its headquarters property:

The ministry's board of trustees, which is headed by Joyce Meyer, agreed to pay her a $900,000 annual salary in 2002 and 2003.

The board agreed to give her husband, Dave Meyer, the board's vice president, an annual salary of $450,000 in each of those same two years.

Paul actually said "I do not permit a woman to teach or have authority over man..." Paul did not say God says this. Women teaching in Church during those days was quite understandable as women were not allowed to learn. Paul was somewhat progressive in even allowing women to learn 'in silence'. I don't think you can make a conclusive case that women can not be allowed to teach or preach since there are several cases in the Bible where God used women to prophesize. In the other case where Paul says women should be silence in Church is often used out of context because Paul was referring to a specific problem of women asking questions to their husbands during Church and being disruptive. Certainly women should submit to the authority of men, but I think it is an extreme interpretation given the context to say that women are really barred from speaking in Church.

Hey, she can fleece them til the cows come home, for all I care. But I'm not so sure about the tax free multi-million dollar homes.

One can criticize the Catholic Church for a variety of things, but one thing that is admirable is that most of her priests do live simple lives. Yes, they do not take a vow of poverty, and so can have private assets and bank accounts. And, yes, they do get free housing. But in most cases, I would guess 95%, the typical parish priest in the USA lives on a monthly salary less than $1000, drives a simple domestic-made car, saves up for a simple one-week vacation, and works exceedingly long hours. By comparison, these TV evangelists are the equivalent of the sellers and money-changers in the temple who turn devotion to the living God into a money-making scheme.

One of the many reasons I admire the Catholic Church, and have remained a member since birth.

How about this spin.
We have a seperation of church and state.
The state should stay out of this. As long as these people are paying thier taxes on thier wealth they should be left alone. We pay extremely high salaries to CEO's.
As for thier followers, if they want to follow people ripping them off. Well they can be free to do that.
They will pay an incredible price when they get to heaven and I think they won't like it much.

The lust for money and material possessions seems to be too strong a temptation for people like Joyce and a few other of the so-called 'televangelists' I won't mention....

Make fun of Bennie Hinn if you wish, but he has gone to India and brought Christ to millions there and just barely escaped from being arrested there. They do make it difficult for some to accept because they do live lavishly, but I leave it to God to work on their weaknesses.

"In St Louis, we have a guy named Larry Rice, who is hardly a polished preacher. He has his own TV station, but comes across more as an oddball than the stereotypical televangelist. He does come across as completely sincere, though."

Your opinion of Mr. Rice and mine differ. They haven't turned the spotlight on him yet because of his political connections. He is in the same vein as Meyers IMO.

Wouldn't that be on the order of taking it out of one pocket and putting it in the other?

That being said, I don't think they should be tax-exempt and I don't care for Meyers. She grates on me.

I agree, but the problem is...if we tax her (and her kind) we have to tax ALL churches, temples, synagogues etc. She (and the others) know how to beat the system, and there is not a damn thing we can do about it.
That pisses me off almost as much as their using the elderly to fund their exhorerant lifestyle.

Lot of judging going on here tonight. See what's in your eye before worrying about what is in another's eye.

Easily the best comment on this thread.

But Joyce does a lot of work spreading the word and has made a lot of sacrifices

Name one sacrifice that she has made, other that having last years model of Mercedes Benz.

You believe she just went on TV one day and became rich and famous? I did not walk in her shoes, but I am certain she went through many many years of struggle. I know she was raped and abused by her father, and just to overcome that emotionally and lead a productive life says something. I am just not one to cast judgement on people who try to walk with Christ.

I remember reading years ago where Billy Graham paid himself $40,000 a year. I hope he has gotten a raise since, he richly deserves it imho.

I said earlier I did not know enough to make a definitive judegment on her. But I can see a rat pretty quickly. I took me 4 minutes to realize Robert Tilton was a dirtball. And 30 seconds for Rev. Al.

At least you are honest. Many here are having knee jerk reactions, which is exactly what the MSM wants.

Joyce Meyer does not hide her wealth. She discusses it and how it affects her and her husband.

She MINISTERS to the public. She uses the examples of her life to help others understand themselves, their problems, and work out solutions. She seems to be able to 'hit home' when she discusses a subject.

Her words do more good than the words of a hundred AL SHARPTON's.

The MSM's goal is to ruin all RELIGION, All CHRISTIAN religions, because it gets in the way of them having complete control of the dEVIL in man.

Because the MSM controls the nation, when they can keep the CORRUPT in office.

If Joyce Meyer is doing anything LEGALLY wrong, she should be investigated and prosecuted.

If she is enjoying the prosperity that GOD has sent her way because of her STEADFASTNESS over the years, her HONESTY, her TRUTHFULNESS, and the POSITIVE things she has done for others, then what is wrong?

She does not heal, nor pretend to heal the physical body. HEAL the spirit? Yes, many, many times her words have healed my soul. Way, way deeper than I can ever explain.

There are only two MINISTERS I know of that are nationally known, that I would trust, or judge to have EARNED their WEALTH.

Billy Graham and Joyce Meyer.
