Who knew? First lady Laura Bush took over the podium from her husband at Saturday night's annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner and knocked 'em dead, keeping Washington's most powerful politicos in stitches as she worked the ballroom like a seasoned stand-up comic.

Although Washington's movers and shakers laughed at Mrs. Bush's performance, some in the press woke up with a Sunday morning hangover and began to criticize her monologue as immodest at best and downright bawdy at worst.
"Laura Bush cracks risque jokes at the White House Correspondents' dinner," sniffed Agence France-Presse. CNN reporter Elaine Quijano, who attended the dinner, also apparently had her sensibilities scarred by some of the first lady's quips.
"In some respects, I think for some folks it was a little shocking because she kind of crossed the line a little bit in some people's minds," she said.
"It was very risque," the Nation's David Korn said yesterday on Fox News. "I was wondering what the social conservatives and James Dobson had to say about all these jokes that were laced with sexual innuendo. Not a very family-values-type speech. I'm not sure I want to explain a lot of those jokes to my 4-year-old."
Eyebrows were raised by the first lady's bit about the president's ranching skills, which Mrs. Bush said her husband lacked because the elite schools he attended, Andover and Yale, "don't have a real strong ranching program."
She then added: "He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse."
The crowd howled. The joke, a female Associated Press reporter said, "had women giggling in the bathroom."

AMEN, Brother!
Methinks you doth protest too much.
Agree completely. Some on this thread set impossible standards and deny their own humanity. They probably believe that the Bush twins are the product of an immaculate conception.
No, the OT does not offend my sensibilities. In fact, I think a lot of people on this thread could profitably spend time reading it. There is nothing in there about the First Lady of the US joking inappropriately in public.
I didn't think you had it in you to make a joke as absurd as a comparison of the lovely, classy Laura Bush and the utterly disgusting Roseann.
I'm glad I came back to see how utterly ridiculous your response was.......
(I'll be laughing for a while with that one!)
A GREAT picture. Thank you.
Was he hand-wringing or milking a horse??
The fact that you are repellant does not necessarily make you righteous.
Don't confuse the two.
I just wondered what moral "credentials" all of you have that allow you to so easily condemn the First Lady for this display of good humor......
(It wouldn't be your political agenda, now, would it??)
I agree, and posted so yesterday. And got pummeled for it.
You won't believe how many FReepers claim that was a nice clean "farmer" joke --and that anybody who thinks otherwise is "dirty-minded."
Be careful in opposing Laura Bush on anything.
Darned right. For my gentle criticisms of parts of Laura's comedy act, I was labeled a "prude" AND a "gutter guy." (Heh. I didn't know until now that one could be both at the same time.)
Most astonishing to me was the FReeper who posted proudly that GERALDO loved Laura's jokes.
The reason the mainstream media loved Laura's act was that some of the jokes belittled her husband. Any joke that belittles George W. Bush --that's hilarious!
When conservatives start thinking we've "arrived" because One of Ours is applauded by Geraldo and the MSM clacque, then I know we're in trouble.
Puhleaze! If I heard Hillary tell jokes about milking cows and milking bulls, I doubt anyone would be having protests about the sexual overtones. lololololol However, I'm not gonna get into the kinds of jokes that FReepers would be making about Hillary and cows. The thread on the subject would be so funny that I would need a toilet near by. It just goes to show that when some folks look at Hillary, they think of her ankles. Laura Bush, on the other hand, seems to cause the thoughts of some men to wander. This subject reminds me of the women-breastfeeding-in-public threads.
You're welcome twigs. My best to you!

Anyone can comment on this.
Yeah, HIS kids probably go to Sidwell Friends.
I see. Overreacting is not agreeing with your opinion? Your headline is not a bad one actually.
Geezer, where I have some heartburn over these jokes is in the passive endorsement the First Lady gives to Desperate Housewives. Do you recall the uproar over the Terrell Owens skit before Monday Night Football with a Desperate Housewives actress? Many on this site thought it was trash TV that exemplified the downward spiral of the media in this country. When the First Lady uses the show as the punch line for a joke it only endorses the show and gives it more of an air of acceptability. Not to mention worldwide publicity. That joke will be remembered and replayed in pop history much like the Dan Quayle Murphy Brown quote.
I'm 51. I wouldn't have like this at 21.
"Kind of reminds me of my boss who brags his 2 year old is fluent in Spanish..."
Yes, and I'll wager his name is Ramirez. Reminds me of the Cheech and Chong song about Mexican-Americans who "go to night school to study Spanish, and get a "B""...
Sister............but thanks. :o)
