Former U.S. Rep. Pete McCloskey, in Houston Sunday for a conference on Palestinian issues, said he and other Republican elders are looking for a candidate to oppose U.S. Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Sugar Land.
"Tom DeLay is an embarrassment to the Republican Party," said McCloskey, who represented Northern California from 1967 to 1983.
He met Sunday with Michael Fjetland, who was defeated by DeLay in Republican primaries in 2000 and 2002 and as an independent in the 2004 general election.
McCloskey is one of nine former congressmen who have formed an informal group he called the "revolt of the elders," to oppose congressmen who they think are guilty of ethics violations.
"Nobody can come into a Texas district and tell the voters who to support," McCloskey said.
But, he added, that just as DeLay raises money from outside the district, his opponents in the next election will also probably get national support.
Fjetland, 55, a lawyer from Missouri City, said he is forming a committee to see if he can gather enough support to take on DeLay in the primary.
He will decide in a couple of months if he will run, Fjetland said.
"If DeLay is ever going to be defeated, this will be the time for it," Fjetland said.
"The people in the 22nd District are tired of his arrogance," he said.
DeLay was admonished three times last year by the House Ethics Committee. Fjetland said many voters are tried of DeLay acting like a bully.
He said the district is 60 percent Republican and another Republican has the best chance of defeating DeLay.
Not lately.
Hmmm...
Some of the speakers at this Leftist conference:
Dr. Azmi Bishara, Palestinian radical member of the Israeli Knesset; Paul Findley (former congressman and author of the "They Dare to Speak Out" and "Silent No More"); Diana Buttu, legal advisor to the PLO Negotiations Affairs Unit; Mazin Qumsiyeh, co-founder of Al-Awda, Palestinian Right of Return; with workshop presentations by Jeff Blankfort, 'spoken word artist' Ora Wise, Mohammed Abed, Professor Robert Jensen, Josh Ruebner of "End the Occupation," and others.
True...and with the media "bootlickers" adoration of $hrillary and the "fear and loathing" of Delay, he should have been better prepared..he had the Rep. Livington (GOP-LA) 2001 example.
I live in Delay's district. Trust me on this that between what he has done here and the way the state legislature has configured his district. He would have to be caught in bed with a dead woman and a live boy to lose.
...follow the $$$$.

Every Working Day. Governing with, and Keeping a Majority, passing the Presidents Agenda, in the House, The Job he has done has been nothing short of Amazing.
People that want to buy into this current alleged 'scandal' manufactured by the increasingly irrelevant Democrats and their enabling handmaidens in the MSM, without actually examining the facts, or for that matter the realities of the situation, are the ones being less than brilliant.
DeLays district will never Go against him, Period.
All of this other crap is being used for one purpose only, to give the Democrats someone Evil to run "against" in 2006,
to help stop the bleeding into further minority status.
(p.s....It isnt going to work...)
HA!..If he were a Dumbo'RAT, it would have been considered an endorsement.
Hope you're right.
Good to hear. :)
I totally agree.
If DeLay's enemies keep sending leftists like this down to his district, he might win the next election unanimously.
I am not at all surprised to see, among those who hate DeLay, well-known anti-semites. After all, Jews/Israel have no better friend in Congress than Tom DeLay.
Folks need to be reminded now and again that Tom DeLay represents a large number of excellent conservative House members.
They are the folks that keep my hopes for America alive.
The more complaints I hear from the RAts and RINO's the more I like DeLay.
Okay liberal RINO's the world over. Let's get one thing straight. You think you want CD22? As our fathers once put it "Come and take it!"
Texas is a big hot state and it really is quite unbearable when the political heat adds in. So if you come here for a fight you better pack light cause the trip home is gonna be a tough one!
Liberal East or Liberal West make no mistake Mid-America IS NOT MIDDLE OF THE ROAD!
CD22 will never abandon Tom DeLay!
T E X A S !
Any idea who the others are? They need to be disinfected by sunlight too!
There is always one story, often two, in the Houston Chronicle every day attempting to undermine support for Tom DeLay.
If McCloskey is the biggest named 'elder' they got, they ain't got much.
