The president taïwanais calls with negotiations with China

TAIPEI - the president taïwanais Chen Shui-bian called Monday with negotiations with rival China for a reconciliation and establishment of a permanent peace, according to remarks' brought back by the agency taïwanaise Central News Agency (CNA).

Mr. Chen, visits some in the Marshall Islands, also offered the installation of a bilateral mechanism of consultation on the military questions and safety in order to alleviate the tensions between the two enemy sisters of Asia.

The president taïwanais had already invited Sunday China to open a dialogue with him in an attempt at resumption of the initiative after a historical visit in Peijing of the chief of the opposition Lien Chan.

Who, in 2005, would trust ANY thing a Communist says or signs??

China is using the power of its purse in many, many countries to buy friends and win influence. It is not inconceivable that it has decided to try that tack with Taiwan. Certainly China had signal success in influencing the Clinton administration.

And you know this how?

Because he's never trusted them before. Because he's not an idiot. Because he knows they hate him?

It occurs to me that China is sitting a mountain of foreign reserves; they have lots and lots of dollars that they don't really need.

Instead of diversifying into yen and euros, and spending gobs of money on greater armament, it might occur to them that it is more cost efficient to simply take $2 billion and spread it out as, say, $10 million on each of the 200 most important power brokers in Taiwan. I think that it would probably constitute the single largest instance of bribery (though Oil-For-Food may be a contender, I guess) in history, but China's wealthy and this purchase of influence would probably be far cheaper and more effective than any military course costing much more.

You got that right. China literally buys allies. Carter, Clinton, the EU, possibly Australia, South Korea, Brazil, Venezuala. The list goes on.
