| Following World War I Congress passed a law that, upon retirement, advanced a Navy commander who had been decorated during the war one grade on the retired list. It was intended as a one-time fix for a decorated officer who's career was compromised by an accident which kept him from promotion. The law, which applied only to the Naval Service, however, remained in effect until 1967 when it was repealed. Marines who retired and had received personal decorations were routinely promoted to the next rank the day after retirement. The effect was most noticed with colonels who, the day following retirement became flag officers. |

Please remember: The Canteen exists to support our military heroes serving all over the world and their families. There are lots of places around Free Republic to talk about politics and debate your views. Please try to keep it out of the Canteen. We want to keep the Canteen a place where the guys and gals who are serving can sit down, kick their shoes off and relax and not have to keep their guard up. Thanks for your help! Now go out there and have FUN!!!! *HUGS!* |
