PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: The President and First Lady attended Sunday morning church services at St. Johns, and were spending a quiet day at the White House.
TRANSCRIPT OF THE DAY: While I could not find an official transcript of the First Lady's remarks last night, I didi find the next best thing by cobbling together several news reports.
First Lady Laura Bush has stolen the show with a surprise comedy routine that teases her husband President George W Bush.
The performance at a dinner honouring award-winning journalists brought a standing ovation from the audience -- that included much of official Washington and a dash of Hollywood.
The president pretended to start a planned a speech last night at the 91st annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner, but was quickly "interrupted" by his wife in an obviously planned ploy. "Not that old joke, not again," she said to the delight of the audience. "I've been attending these dinners for years and just quietly sitting there. I've got a few things I want to say for a change."
GWB sat down and Laura proceeded to note that he is "usually in bed by now," and said she told him recently, "If you really want to end tyranny in the world you're going to have to stay up later." She outlined a typical evening: "Nine o'clock, Mr. Excitement here is sound asleep and I'm watching Desperate Housewives." Comedic pause. "With Lynne Cheney." Comedic pause. "Ladies and gentlemen, I am a desperate housewife."
The First Lady went on to quip that one night she went out to Chippendales, a male strip bar, with Lynne Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and top Bush aide Karen Hughes.
"I wouldn't even mention it, except (Supreme Court Justices) Ruth Ginsberg and Sandra Day O'Connor saw us there," she said. "I won't tell you what happened. But Lynne's secret service code name is now 'dollar bill'."
Laura Bush also joked about the president's mother Barbara Bush. "People think she's a sweet grandmotherly aunt Bea type. She's actually more like (fictional Mafia capo) Don Corleone."
She said that her husband actually knew little about ranching when they bought their ranch in Crawford, Texas.
"I'm proud of George. He's learned a lot about ranching since that first year, when he tried to milk the horse. What's worse, it was a male horse," she said.
The president now often spends time at the ranch clearing brush and cutting trails. "George's answer to any problem at the ranch is to cut it down with a chainsaw. Which I think is why he and Cheney and Rumsfeld get along so well."
Barney is on the right near the house.
Thanks :) When I was younger, I was obsessed with horses. I still have horse posters and stuff. People keep giving me horse stuff even though I haven't been in love with horses since I was about 12.
Hey, if George is in bed by nine ..
Oh, oh, about to say something off color.
Speaking of that event, I watched it and also taped it.
When I went back to look at the start of it, when Laura walked up ... by the way, that was perfect. do they have comic timing, or what. George starts telling an old joke, offers it to Cedric... you can use this, Cedric, and then, Laura is there.
But what I really meant to say was...
Post #8, bottom picture . . . look at the angle of his arm and the look of love in both their faces . . . she's definitely getting a "love pat"!
I've never seen him blush before and it's adorable! I bet there's a LOT of teasing between them both, for a long time, for the jokes she made!
Drudge has a link to a report about the guy that does those WH dinner speech thingies.
I am OK got tomorrow off work as it public holiday in the UK (May Day) unfortunately I am not going to any maypole dancing or Morris festivals but I expect I will see some on TV. Feeling a bit down now over Dr Deb I sincerely hope she reconsiders and it was just that she got a little upset yesterday and tonight.
I see Miss Beazley is center of attention HOW CUTEE LOL!
RE: in bed by nine . . . I, too, was thinking that that meant their MARRIAGE is WONDERFUL!
After she spoke, Geraldo was gushing about what a great job she did -- he's usually so cynical, it was funny to hear.
Deb, I beg you to reconsider. You have been so very generous with even those of us who mostly lurk. I always take your commentary very seriously, and I respect your judgment so very much. I can't imagine FR without you.
DrDeb, I hope you don't mean that and get over it.
You are our voice of reason and our poll person.
Just because we don't agree about the performance last nite, doesn't mean we don't love and respect you.
Some of the people here can be unnecessarily nasty when they disagree. I hate that. I hope I don't do it, but I may from time to time.
I've had some of the feelings you've had lately, but things seem to be settling down. For a long time, this was the only place I felt safe. I don't think anyone here would say anything ugly to you, I hope not.
**I really love that picture of W blushing**
Me too! He's even cuter when he's blushing! :)
**Seeing them so in love makes me want to have a relationship like that when I'm older**
Ditto. As I told my best friend (and I think I've said it here about 600 times so I hope no one's sick of hearing it) I want to find someone who looks at me the way Dubya looks at Laura.
Have a good day off! I will be priming and painting the basement . . . stop over if you need something to do--LOL!
aww I see it! How sweet! haha yep...the blushing pic is my new fave along with the "love pat".
Funny thing, Laura Bush gave an interview to CNN's Dana Bash a day or so before the dinner in which she said she has NEVER even watched Desperate Housewives. Her daughters gave her the DVD of the first year's shows and she's never even watched it. Truth be told, I haven't either.
Thanks, Wolfstar, you have done it again sharing those great photos with the rest of us.
I am in awe of Laura Bush. She gave such a polished performance, with perfect comedic timing and inflection, it was very professional and yet sounded natural. Where did she learn that?
Maybe we should run her against Hilary in '08 . . .
Me 2...and he is cuter while blushing...Laura should make him blush even more!
Get over there and shake some sense into Deb!
But what I was going to say earlier about the show ...
Was anyone else really longing to just choke that Awful Mark Smith or whatever his name was. The new president of the Press organization.
The man was impossible. So smug and full of himself...talking about his wife and children having to put up with all the responsibility he has, his long hours, his duty... you'd think he was taking bullets in Iraq instead of dreaming up nasty questions for the President.
And then he has the nerve to smirk over at the Prez and indicate that the press is doing a service with their "hard" questions and maybe, like in 2009 he'll look back and thank them.
What a self-important, ridiculous jerk. The guy he followed was bad enough, but he is the worst.
Well, it is very funny. Outrageous, of course.
I would call it a guilty pleasure, but I don't feel guilty.
I absolutely adore the Barney and Beezie pictures! They are just the cutest!
I love the one of Beezie at the mic. Maybe she's learning how to give the press a piece of her mind!
