Report: Japan sex industry ensnares Latin women

LIMA, Peru (AP) -- At least 1,700 women from Latin America and the Caribbean are lured each year into sexual slavery in Japan's huge illicit sex industry, according to a new report.

A team of researchers hired by the Organization of American States found that most of the women come from Colombia, Bolivia, Brazil, Mexico and Peru.

The team of researchers -- led by Phillip Linderman, an expert on loan from the U.S. State Department -- presented the "Rapid Assessment Report" to an international seminar on human trafficking sponsored by Peru's Foreign Ministry on Friday.

The OAS analysis was culled from interviews with presumed victims, Japanese immigration records and crime data.

The 37-page report estimated tens of thousands of undocumented foreign women in Japan, mostly from other Asian countries, are exploited by crime organizations, like Yakuza, Japan's second-largest crime syndicate.

Japan's National Police Agency estimates the sex trade industry there to be worth $83 billion a year

Linderman said governments on both sides of the Pacific paid little attention to the problem until recently.

The Colombian Embassy in Japan stood out, aggressively working to identify and assist the estimated 4,000 Colombians it believes are human trafficking victims.

But Linderman said the figures in his report probably represent only a percentage of trafficking victims, particularly from other Latin American countries like Peru, which is just starting to tackle the issue.

Thank you...I had a sister who spent three months in Japan teaching English before she fled home in horror at what she had seen! A sick, sick country.

I think the Germans could give them a run for their money, especially when it comes to sex and popular culture.

" been going on for years."

All the more reason it should have been stopped.

If it weren't for the Pacific ocean, Japan would be awash in illegal Mexican immigrants to (ahem) 'feed the need'.

I wonder how accurate an assesment one can make after only three months. I've lived in Tokyo for the past two years. Not sick at all. No panhandlers, hardly any grafitti, teenagers are fairly respectul, low crime rate, virtually no theft. I love it here.

Must add that another woman I know moved to Japan (also to teach English) and loves it for the same reason that you do. My sister was extremely disturbed by the Japanese attitude towards women (violent pornography sold in grocery stores, used panties sold in train-station vending machines, women dressed like little girls, etc.)

I've been teaching here for 19 years ...Has always been a love/hate relationship ...The place is full of pervs for sure ...And the vast majority of women under the age of 35 are goofy ...It's still a man's world over here , but it is changing , albeit at a snail's pace ...Crime/murder way up since I arrived in '85 ...but still lower than the U.S...I live in the Kumamoto countryside now , where crime is virtually non-existent . A peaceful existence ...Biggest threat to our lives comes from North Korea ...

My life experience supports that: I have lived in NYC and Las Vegas and both attract a fair share of Japanese folks. Younger Japanese women are fairly goofy: they tend to get very nervous (and even giggly) when in an elevator with a man, for example. It's kind of an exaggerated nervous girlishness, I think.

Then again, maybe it's just personal to me - just my experience! :-)

We have had numerous japanese students stay with us during summer months. ALL the girls are that way. They are kept quite innocent and tend to act like little grammar school children.

Just cultural. However, they all write english. speak very little, at least from what I have seen.

Most male counterparts smoke and hang with their buddies.

It's an odd culture by our standards: it is like a carnival funhouse mirror reflection of our own culture. Like they took a lot of our stuff, mised it with there stuff, and got something genuinely odd as a result.

It never bothered me, though. I always found it odd (and offputting) but it's just a headscratcher to me. Nothing more, nothing less.

I do want to visit Japan someday, it's on my list of 'things to do.'

" Most male counterparts smoke and hang with their buddies."

More and more Japanese women are shunning marriage , at least to a Japanese man ...They've seen what their mothers have had to endure want no part of it ...A friend in the U.K. just the other day sent me a newspaper article about single Japanese professional women invading the U.K.( and NY ) in search of a husband . These dating agencies in England are charging $ 7500 for introductions ! "
