University plan for Navy center protested

HONOLULU - The interim president of the University of Hawaii refused to sign a letter Friday canceling plans to establish a proposed Navy research center at the school, as a sit-in at the president's office entered a second day.

Interim President David McClain said he planned to meet individually with the 50 protesters beginning Saturday morning, a day after he told them they were trespassing and could be subject to arrest.

No arrests had been made as of Friday afternoon.

The group of students, faculty and community members oppose the university's plans to enter a five-year $50 million contract with the Navy to establish a classified research center on the Manoa campus.

Protesters, many of them students whose final exams start in 10 days, said they wouldn't leave until the letter is signed.

"We are going to stay as long as we can stay," said Cody Brown, 22, a senior at the Manoa campus. "We'll stay through finals."

University administrators on Thursday allowed protesters to sleep inside the hall where McClain's office is located.

Hawaii administrators have said the research center is a way of bringing money into the university, and that faculty would have the option of whether to participate or not.

However, many protesters have said the center would further militarize the state. Hawaii is already home to a number of military bases, including the Navy's base at Pearl Harbor several miles from campus.

Hawaii NEEDS the miliary. They don't have much else in the way of, er, white collar potential. The protesters are too stupid to think ahead, or to think with anything above their groins. Idiots.
