DANBURY, Conn. This middle-class New England suburb is nowhere near an international border but it still has the illegal immigration problems familiar to cities like San Diego and Tucson, Ariz. Mayor Mark Boughton (search) blames the government for his town's inability to cope with 15,000 illegal immigrants, approximately 19 percent of the overall population. "This is one community that has been incredibly stressed by failed federal policy and we need help," said Boughton. Because the illegal residents aren't counted in the U.S. census, Danbury (search) doesn't receive any federal aid for them. "In terms of our social services, this presents a tremendous strain, particularly on quality of life of our neighborhoods, our schools our health care system," Boughton said. Residents complain the influx is killing property values. Homeowner Peter Gadiel said neighbors are fed up. "They're blue collar workers and their whole life savings is tied up in their house and they're seeing their neighborhood being destroyed." The mayor says he wants state police officers to be deputized as federal immigration officers giving them access to a federal database and helping them track illegal immigrants. But Connecticut's attorney general said Boughton needs the approval of the governor and others before that can happen. Boughton has set up a task force to inspect neighborhoods that have received a lot of complaints about buildings housing illegal immigrants. In one home, the task force found 30 cots in the basement, each one being rented for $5 a night.

Maybe Regis and Imus should check their wait staff and gardeners. I'd hate to see them get caught hiring illegals.
Yes folks, and the hordes are heading your way, guess we all better start brushing up on our Spanish.
I don't feel too sorry for a liberal state like Connecticut. Let them struggle. Maybe they will come to appreciate the difficulty that the rest of us face.
I speak fluent Spanish, having lived in a South American country for a couple of years, but I choose not to do so with these people because I'm not going to aid and abet them with their cultural reconquista. It's time we put our foot down. Viva la Migra! Viva the Minuteman Project and like projects by American patriots!
I'm sorry, but this is the best way to redistribute the wealth and property of gringos to the folks who truly deserve it. Until the neocommunists take over the country and form a government to "re-educate" those who have ill-gotten wealth, seize that wealth, punish the wrong-doers and officially turn that wealth over to those pobrecitos who deserve it, this is the best they can do. The white "owners" of ill-gotten wealth in Danbury will have to live with it because the government in Washington is working for the other side.
Buy a few rolls of barbed wire, buy some surplus military tents, and deputize some of your good citizens.
If nothing else, many will suddenly decide to leave for migrate to friendlier sanctuaries.

I agree with you, Brilliant! Let this happen in Connecticut. Maybe when wealthy bleeding-hearts have to live in communities in which this is happening, they'll come around to a sane position on immigration.
Nothing spurs people to action like being hit in the pocketbook, or seeing their property values plummet.
Unfortunately, this will have to happen in many cities before it is likely to snowball enough to make the feds look at it. Our next terrorist attack may prove to accellerate the process, but, like all here, would prefer that not have to happen to wake these folks up.

For those who don't know the area, Danbury is a lower-middle class ethnically mixed area. It is NOT the tony suburbs of lower Fairfield County. Interesting that it has received alot of attention as of late, as my ex-girlfriend (a legal immigrant from Peru) had family who lived there since at least the early 90s. When you mix illegals with Archie Bunker types, it makes for a combustible mix.
It never ceases to amaze me how many Freepers RACIALIZE the immigration debate and base the immigrants instead of their NEIGHBORS who hire them and the politicians who choose not to enforce the law. Besides, Hispanics/Latinos are NOT A RACE. The term "La Raza" is used EXCLUSIVELY by some Mexicans to refer to "La Raza Cosmica," a term coined by the philosopher Jose Vasconcelos to refer to the racially mixed folk who formed the majority of the Mexican population.
Last time I was there, the immigrant population (legal and illegal) was largely Dominican and Ecuadoran. Most of the white folks were of the tavern, sports and cigarette set. Like I said before, not exactly a mix conducive to racial harmony.
Read my #15. The wealthy folks in Greenwich and Westport don't give a sh-t. Places like Danbury are well off their radar screens.
Not much anyone can do about it until we elect a President who will enforce existing immigration laws. Until then, we will pay dearly for it while we watch our towns turn into Mexican colonias.
I was just thinking.. maybe anti-immigration conservatives shouldn't be cheering so much at the new pope, going to enforce catholic views.
You know Mexico I believe is the second largest catholic nation in the world, and a very religious people. If they followed the good pope Benedict, they could literally take us over demographically.
People complained in my ma's old nabe when signs appeared in Spanish back in the 1960s as Puerto Ricans and Dominicans moved in. Now these same street have signs in Arabic. As you know, I am all for getting our borders under control, just saying that the situation on the East Coast has always been different. Whatever the case, folks will continue to vote Democratic as they always have, regardless of their ethnicity.
