Alfonso Gagliano, onetime public works minister
and former ambassador to Denmark.

Former public works minister Alfonso Gagliano said Monday that Prime Minister Paul Martin has taken Canada and the federal Liberal party down the road to ruin. "He's going to destroy the party and break up the country,'' Gagliano said during an interview with Radio-Canada, the French-language network of the CBC.

He said Quebec sovereignty is inevitable after the revelations at Justice John Gomery's inquiry into the sponsorship program once headed by Gagliano _ and if the Conservatives replace the minority Liberal government.

"It's a question of time,'' said Gagliano, who was prime minister Jean Chretien's Quebec lieutenant.

"Of course, if (Quebec Liberal Premier Jean) Charest makes a miracle and forms a second government, it could possibly be put off. But I think that at this stage, the separation of Quebec from Canada is not stoppable. It's a question of time. It's going to happen.''

The Gomery inquiry was ordered by Martin last year after a report by federal auditor general Sheila Fraser found irregularities in the sponsorship program set up under Chretien to promote national unity.

The inquiry has heard that sponsorship money was funnelled to Liberal-friendly ad firms in Quebec in exchange for contributions to the bankrupt Quebec wing of the party.

Gagliano, who was recalled as ambassador to Denmark by Martin, made no apologies for the revelations at the inquiry but denied allegations by former Quebec Liberal organizer Benoit Corbeil that volunteers were paid by the Groupaction Marketing firm.

Gagliano said it was his understanding that the party paid the volunteers.

He also wondered why the sponsorship inquiry did not investigate how Martin financed his own run for the Liberal leadership.

"Certain communications firms that were close to Mr. Martin, Earnscliffe to be exact, took in ... millions of dollars,'' Gagliano said.

He said there was nothing scandalous in the sponsorship program to his knowledge.

"BTW, has it ever been resolved whether this guy is a "wise guy" or not?"

No, and it may never be, but the claim did from an "FBI confidential informant" and received some media coverage.

Conservative standard: "if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, etc, etc, etc.
Liberal standard: "A proof is a proof. What kind of a proof? It's a proof. A proof is a proof. And when you have a good proof, it's because it's proven." - Former PM Jean Chrétien, 2002

Take your choice.

BC is not an option.

If the frogs break away from Ottawa, the Atlantic provinces will be the ones who will be most likely to consider annexation by the U.S.

Mainly because they are such an economic basket case and rely heavily on Ottawa.

Nova Scotia is where my dad's side of the family arrived from Wales. There was a split in the family and a bunch moved to the US at about the time of the Revolutionary War.

Nova Scotia is (mostly, except for short stints in B.C. and England) where I grew up and went to public school and university. My father was in the navy, so it was either there or Esquimalt, B.C. We mostly stayed in the Halifax area. I wasn't really a Nova Scotian, though, you aren't unless your family roots there go back at least 4 or 5 generations. I miss it, but the economic opportunities down there just aren't great. Now I live in Hamilton, Ontario (Steel town).

"He's going to destroy the party and break up the country,''

He said that as if that would be a bad thing.

We do not really want the maritimes. We want the prairie provinces. What I guess might be an ideal (although not likely) solution: Quebec goes on its own. Maritimes, territories (Yukon, NWT, etc) and Ontario remain as Canada. And the western provinces join the US: Sask, Manitoba, Alberta and BC. Would that be a viable Canada? Or would Ontario go on its own, and kick out the maritimes? Also, doesn't northern Quebec have a bunch of Indians who don't want to be part of another country?

I would really be surprised if Quebec separates. Lots of immigrants in Quebec are making it less French. It probably couldn't win in a province-wide referendum.

Last week France announced that they agree with China's intention of taking back Taiwan by force.

I'm sure America would follow France's policy here and support Anglo Canadians taking back French Canada by force.

I as a canadian will never allow that to happen. What you're saying is treason. The only province I wanted to go is Quebec. Heck, they find calling themselves "canadian" offensive.

My suggestion is trade NYC and New England for all of Canada west of Ontario. Hope that doesn't leave you in the cold. It's easy to move you know if it does.

My suggestion is to GIVE them NYC and New England...They can keep Canukistan...

Thanks, but support us against who?

Due to Trudeau's bilingualism, every one above cook and bottle washer (no offense to anyone) has to be bilingual.

Understand? It's like the federal government here. 80% of the employees have French as their mother tongue.

Our army IS French.

Nah. The mark of a good businessman is that he takes something he doesn't want and trades it for something he does. I'm sure we could find something to do with all those oil reserves.
