WASHINGTON Conflicts are multiplying between congressional Republican moderates and the White House as President Bush pursues his aggressively conservative second-term agenda.
The unexpected resistance to Bush's nomination of John R. Bolton as U.N. ambassador from several Senate Republicans marks the latest, and potentially most intense, clash. But battles over Social Security, Bush's budget proposal and ending the filibuster for judicial nominations also are raising tensions inside the party.

Tensions are no more raised than usual. This is terrible reporting. I don't think dissent is allowed in the DemocRAT party.

The clash is between Bush and leftist democrats. Liberal republicans have just been scared.Exactly! Journalists LOVE to use liberal Republicans as cover. Then they site examples like this to show how "balanced" they are, since the story is about Republicans.

Browstein is frined of many democrats, especially people like Algore. However, he can be very honest sometimes, which is more than I can say for anyone at the NY Times.

And crazed, left-wing screwballs are never referred to as "liberals" but by their titles, while normal people like us are "ultra-conservative", "far right wing" or simply: "Nazi SS stormtroopers". You almost need a Berlitz code book to understand these people.
Check out 'South Park Conservatives'. I almost read the entire thing last evening.
(Btw, great tagline)

How about sending Shirley Temple back to the U.N.?
That should help get the full support of Rats and RINOs.
That'll be one less problem for the right wing extremist, untra-conservative Birchite President.

From here on out...escalating as we move up to the 08 primaries...it will be a power contest between the liberal / moderate wing of the pub party and the conservative wing of the pub party.
If Bush and the other republican leaders stay out of the fight, or side with the moderates, or simply cave...the liberals / moderates will prevail, unless the issue is so unpopular that the base basically revolts..like we are seeing to some extent with Bolton, and we will see in the future with immigration and judges.
If Bush and CO get actively involved, and forcefully push a conservative agenda...with the active support of the party base...the conservatives should prevail.
I think its that simple. Alot is riding on Bush...he is the defacto leader of the Republican party...lame duck or not.
If he fails to lead...he will end up the lamest of lame ducks.

I would state the more truthful Story would be that clashes are growing between the GOP base and the obstructionist Mavericks.
