WASHINGTON - In private talks with Majority Leader Bill Frist, the Senate's top Democrat has indicated a willingness to allow confirmation of at least two of President Bush's seven controversial appeals court nominees, but only as part of a broader compromise requiring Republicans to abandon threats to ban judicial filibusters, officials said Monday.

At the same time he offers to clear two nominees to the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals for approval, officials said Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record), D-Nev., wants a third appointee to be replaced by an alternative who is preferred by Michigan's two Democratic senators. The officials spoke only on condition of anonymity, citing the confidential nature of the conversations between the two leaders.

Reid issued a statement during the day saying he has had numerous conversations with senators in both parties in hopes of avoiding a showdown. "As part of any resolution, the nuclear option must be off the table," the statement concluded, referring to the GOP threat of banning judicial filibusters.

Extend your hand to a Democrat and he'll tear it off and beat you over the head with it. If the Republicans don't know this by now, they're bigger asses than I thought they were.

I avoided this thread in order to protect my blood pressure, which is usually normal.

IF frist caves in order to accommodate ANYTHING to sell out MI, I WILL actively oppose his stupid presidential bid.

MI is NOT a BLUE state to be ignored.

I'm with you rc, I bet Frist is salivating at the thought of not having to pull the trigger on the filibusters. This is ridiculous! No. All the president's nominees that make it out of committee deserve an up or down vote. It is not up to Reid or Biden to decide who will be voted on. Frist I'm sure will fall for this however.

Agreed.

Flood Frist's office.

We will not surrender the President's Constitutional Rights. The Republicans have NO authority on my behalf or the base to negotiate these rights away. They have no authority under the Constitution to do so.

Senator Frist, VOTE. END IT NOW or ELSE Marvericks and Reps will pay. One for being snakes. The other for being wimps.

Whatever happened to actually making the Democrats filibuster these judges?

Pull out the cots, bring the sleeping bags, and let's see floor debate/filibuster until the end of this session.

Do they even do this anymore? Or do they not have to do a real filibuster these days?

Democrats are trying to find a way to keep the filibuster in place in anticipation of using it against a Supreme Court nominee without having to roll over on the Appellate court nominees. A compromise is just playing into their hand and they will play the filibuster trump card on a Supreme Court nominee without hesitation. Get it all out in the open now...

I still say go back to the Mr. Smith Goes to Washington style of filibuster and let the Democrats show the nation what obstructionist they are. They can't complain about a return to the traditional form of filibuster. Thats what they have been saying ...

Weird.

I basically posted the same thing a few minutes before you did in the previous threaded post.

I like the Mr. Smith reference. What is wrong with actually making a filibuster a filibuster?

Right; I'll just bet Bush will let Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow pick one for him.

He best not. I'd prefer they continue on their multiple year stalemate and use it to defeat Stabenow. But you can bet the Dems are looking for a way to neutralize this long standing problem with Bush's Michigan nominees. It's hard to figure the politics of this one though, she was barely elected in a state that has been minimally blue for a while.

No deals. No compromise. Either they all get up-or-down votes, or push through the constitutional option.

Oh yeah I'll tell him and I will also tell those guys who call me twice a week for donations to the RNC.

Not one red cent until you bust the filibuster.
