MEET THE PEOPLE FOR THE AMERICAN WAY
Out Of The Mainstream Organization Providing Democrats With Resources To Block President Bush's Judicial Nominee

"'People for the American Way' is yet another example of an extreme special interest group that Democrats allow to control their agenda in Congress. It is troubling that Senate Democrats would align themselves with a radical political agenda far out of the mainstream on such important issues to our country. Blocking well-qualified nominees for political gain may sound like a good idea for liberal extremists, but it is certainly not in the best interest of the American people."

-Tracey Schmitt, RNC Press Secretary

Liberal People For The American Way (PFAW) Enlisting Hollywood Support To Block President Bush's Judicial Nominees:

President Of PFAW Ralph Neas Expects To Enlist Hollywood Celebrities Against Bush Nominees. "At People for the American Way, President Ralph Neas leads a broad coalition of environmental, civil rights, abortion-rights, and labor groups. In 1987, he led the Block Bork coalition of 300 groups. This time around, Neas might mobilize 1,000 organizations. He expects that Hollywood celebs, such as Alec Baldwin or Kathleen Turner, also would speak out. For several years, People for the American Way has churned out reports with titles like 'Courting Disaster' on what might happen if more conservative judges were appointed to the court." (Angie Cannon, "Full-Court Press," U.S. News & World Report, 2/14/05)

PFAW Has Entered Judicial Nomination Debate With Re-Release Of 1980 TV Advertisement Attacking The Right's "Manipulation Of Religion." "When aired in 1980, the ad was the beginning of People For the American Way Foundation, and its message - a reminder that Americans value religious tolerance and diversity -- is even more important today." (People For The American Way Website, http://www.pfaw.org, Accessed 4/25/05)

PFAW Funds Go Almost Entirely To Democrats:

Between 1998 And 2004, People For The American Way Voters Alliance Gave $478,711 (99.3%) To Democrats And $3,500 (0.7%) To Republicans.

PFAW Has Criticized GOPers For Religious Outreach, But Failed To Mention Democrat Activities:

"Now The Liberal Group People For The American Way Is Buying Advertisements And Distributing Church Program Inserts That Attack Senator Frist For Invoking Religious Faith In What It Says Is A Partisan Context." (David D. Kirkpatrick And Sheryl Gay Stolberg, "Frist Is Drawing Criticism From Some Church Leaders," The New York Times, 4/22/05)

"The Democratic National Committee Is Considering Creating A Center For Religious Outreach That Would Focus On Increasing Turnout Among Regular Churchgoers, Mirroring Republican Efforts." (Perry Bacon Jr., "Trying Out A More Soulful Tone," Time Magazine, 2/7/05)

"In The House, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi Of California Has Formed A 'Faith-Based Working Group,' Chaired By Rep. James E. Clyburn, A Minister's Son From South Carolina, To Reach Out To Religious Leaders And Help The Party Better Speak The Language Of Faith." (John Cochran, "Finding Faith In The Center," CQ Weekly, 3/5/05)

PFAW And Leaders Anti-Religious Statements And Activities:

PFAW Has Defended Offensive, Publicly Funded Anti-Catholic Art. "[A] painting by British-born Roman Catholic Chris Ofili called 'Holy Virgin Mary,' illustrates the perils of political art criticism. Ofili's use of elephant dung in this painting, as in his other works, is inspired by his explorations of the culture of Nigeria, where both his parents were born, and where ... excrement is often incorporated into religious artwork.'" (People For The American Way, Press Release, 10/1/99)

Founder Of PFAW And Liberal Hollywood Activist Norman Lear: School Prayer Is A "Joke." "I grew up with prayer in schools. It was a joke. We also pledged allegiance to the flag.... So prayer in school was a joke." (Thomas M. Landy, "What's Missing From This Picture? Television Producer Norman Lear; Interview," Commonweal, 10/9/92)

In 1984 "PFAW Petitions And Letters Help Persuade The Senate To Defeat Constitutional Amendments Mandating School Prayer In Public Schools." (People For The American Way Website, "People For the American Way And People For The American Way Foundation: A History," http://www.pfaw.org, Accessed 7/17/04)

PFAW Way Out Of Mainstream:

The Associated Press, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, And The Washington Post, All Describe People For The American Way As "Liberal." (Hilary Roxe, "Critics Say Frist Connecting With Religious Groups For Political Ends," The Associated Press, 4/23/05; David D. Kirkpatrick and Sheryl Gay Stolberg, "Frist Is Drawing Criticism From Some Church Leaders," The New York Times, 4/22/05; Charlie Savage, "Ad Wars Mount As Republicans Ready Ban On Senate Filibusters," The Boston Globe, 4/21/05; Michael A. Fletcher, "Anti-'Activist' Activism," The Washington Post, 4/15/05)

PFAW Proudly Opposes Internet Porn Filters In Public Libraries. "Supported by the People for the American Way, several Loudoun County, Virginia residents and members are claiming the Loudoun County Library Board's decision to require all Loudoun County public libraries to install Internet filtering software violates their rights under the First Amendment." ("First Internet Censorship Case Raises Serious First Amendment Concerns," Your School And The Law, 5/8/98)

President Of PFAW Ralph Neas: "'Moral' Claims Have Been Used To Try To Justify Nearly Every Form Of Discrimination Against Minority Groups ... The Court Has ... Upheld The [Boy] Scouts' Blatantly Unfair And Unlawful Practice Of Excluding Gay Boys And Men On 'Moral' Grounds." (People For the American Way, Press Release, 6/28/01)

In 2001 "PFAW Compiled And Released Creationism In 2001: A State-By-State Report, Documenting The Concerted Campaign By The Radical Right To Deny Science Teachers The Authority To Teach Their Classes The Most Authoritative Scientific Information About The Origins Of Life." (People For The American Way Website, "People For the American Way And People For The American Way Foundation: A History," http://www.pfaw.org, Accessed 7/17/04)

PFAW Called President Bush's Tax Cuts "Reckless." (People For The American Way Website, "People For the American Way And People For The American Way Foundation: A History," http://www.pfaw.org, Accessed 7/17/04)

It sounds as though there's nothing American about "People for the American Way."
Shouldn't they change their name to "People for the Marxist Way"?

I was once a member of and a contributor to "People for...."

Then I realized I had been a victim of Bait and Switch. "People for.. " had ACTUAL behavior and positions that radically diverged from their glossy PR and promises.

I discovered they were very radical and very evil.

Not to be mean....but Ralph Neas is one of the more unfortunate looking people in politics. He once ran for Connie Morrella's old congressional seat, and lost handily....even the democrats laid the blame on the "looks" factor. So you lose and election and end up heading a non-profit.

DNC Chairman Howard Dean: "We Are Definitely Going To Do Religious Outreach. We're Definitely Going To Reach Out To The Evangelical Community[.]"

Right. Something like, "We're having our monthly group orgy next Thursday and you're all invited."

I've seen an ad on TV lately that begins with some guy claiming to be a Republican, but he thinks it's time to take some power away from the Republicans because it's too dangerous to have one party with too much power. The ad ends with a notice of the ad being paid for by PFAW. I get ticked every time I see this ad. There is no way this guy is a Republican, maybe a RINO, at best. I know the PFAW is a lefty organization, but how many Americans don't?

I've been wanting to express my disgust about this ad, so thanks for this topic and the opportunity!

Why THE People?

They don't represent me. I object. I want their name changed to Some People or A Few People or just People.

I think I'll file something. Or other.
