A race between Congressman Bernie Sanders and Governor Jim Douglas would touch off a political domino effect in Vermont.
Vermont is in Political chaos, Instead of 16 years of nearly unchangable election results, they could possibly have an open House, open Senate and Open Governor seats. Now all we need is for Leahy to chroke.

Whatever happens, the end result will be something really weird, it's vermont. Leahy, Jeffords, Dean, Sanders, all crackpots, traitors and socialists.

Sanders is the one who admits to being a Socialist.

Not if Jim Douglas runs. I think that the governor would beat Sanders. Douglas has been winning elections since 1972. The only time he lost was when he ran against Pat Leahy in 1992. Douglas was outspent by more than 10-to-1 in a year when George H.W. Bush lost Vermont overwhelmingly. But even then, Douglas lost by only 11% and ran far ahead of the top of his ticket. Last year, Douglas beat a Sanders protoge' easily, running well ahead of the current President Bush.
It is ironic that Vermont, once a leader in the Revolutionary War effort, has become a haven for socialist dogma and just plain corrupt America-bashers like Dean, Sanders, Leahy, et al.
Why? is Vermont electing liberals. The Yankee mountain men surely are not voting for them. Do they have a lot of Mass commuters there, or what?

So the most likely next candidates could be floral candidates wearing transgender clothes and makeup, sporting a gay affectation and dancing on tippy toes....
So, how many dominos we talking here? 3, maybe 4?
But Dubie is also very popular. He got 54.7% of the vote to 37.9% and 6.2% for the 2 pinko candidates.
If Dubie runs we have a credible candidate who CAN defeat Sanders and at the same time we should probably be able to keep the Governors office as well.
BTW, I think it is worth noting that in 1994 the GOP actually made a credible effort to defeat Sanders. They ran a legitimate (but not very well known) candidate, spent a good deal of money and kept Sanders under 50% of the vote. It wasn't quite enough but it demonstrates what can be done towards turning this state around.

of Mass,NY and surrounding areas made a conscious effort to
claim VT as their own.I'll bet that there are fewer natives
living there than there are in CA,NV or FL.

Last year there was movement afoot (discussed alot here on FR) for Libertarians to pick a state they could move to and affect the political climate. I believe NH was the winner.
Having travelled quite a bit up east, I can say Vermont is a lovely state. Oddly enough, they are famous in gun-circles for the "Vermont-style carry." Go figure...
Didn't a lot of draft-dodgers move to VT so as to have an escape route to Canada? They stayed and grew up.
When I was a kid (born conservative) growing up in Massachusetts, Vermont, to me, was the epitome of conservatism. How things change!
