Poppy, Bubba Best Buds (HURL!)
The New York Daily News ^ | April 23, 2005 | Thomas M. DeFrank

WASHINGTON - Family and friends who say the improbable love fest between George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton is totally genuine still can't refrain from occasionally rolling their eyes.

Barbara Bush, the 41st President's tart-tongued wife, calls them the Odd Couple. Florida Gov. Jeb Bush now refers to the Democrat who ended his father's political career as "Bro."

A close friend of the Bush family spoke for many partisans on both sides of the political divide last week by musing, "It's a good development for the country - but it sure is a strange development. I'm a little speechless."

And President George W. Bush, who created this tag-team mismatch by naming his immediate predecessors joint envoys for U.S. tsunami relief efforts, brought down the house at Washington's A-list Gridiron Club dinner last month by mentioning Clinton's recent surgery.

"When he woke up he was surrounded by his loved ones: Hillary, Chelsea and my Dad," Bush deadpanned.

The emerging warm friendship between the Oscar and Felix of American politics, who now call themselves Bill and George and have even begun telephoning one another for advice, is that rarest of commodities: a good-news story amid the partisan rancor of an increasingly polarized capital city.

"I'm enjoying the relationship, and to be honest with you I didn't think I would," Bush recently told the Daily News.

Once bitter political foes with minimal regard for each other, the 80-year-old Bush and 58-year-old Clinton have forged surprisingly close ties, a who-would-have-thought development helped along by a parallel thaw between Clinton and the current President Bush.

Reminds me of the barn cat we brought home when Prior Lake Jake, our late, departed Golden Retriever was a pup. Jake fell in love with the Persian male tomcat. He would corner the cat in the garage and lick him until he was gooey wet, hair pointed the wrong direction. Never could figure out what it was that attracted Jake to the taste of cat...

He is not the truly evil one, his wife is. Bill Clinton is an opportunist, a politician, with few values of his own. But Hillary will seek and gain power any way she can and this may well be a part of the scheme, although it would be nice to think of it as a sincere friendship. It's hard not to be cynical with her somewhere in the background.

As usual most of you can't see the master plan here.
Now there may be reasons that Clinton really likes being with Bush 41, he may look at him as a Father figure since he really did not have one. Who knows it may be a positive influence on his life after two heart surgeries.
The other side of this is that Bush 43 sees how to handle Clinton, shower him with kindness, appoint him to do a few things that appeal to his ego, keep him somewhat in the loop and take him him to Pope John Paul's funeral, etc..
The result is that Clinton has not been critical of Bush and because of his inclusion in things probably would not want to jeopardize all of that. W. has Clinton right where he wants him and in the process may have helped him some.
At this point I just can't too upset with what Clinton does or does not do and after all we have moved on haven't we, we are now in Bush's second term and we more important things to worry about.

I must say, this is truly puzzling. Either Bill Clinton isn't half the sociopath I thought he was and it was Hillary all along, or he's the smoothest sociopath this side of the planet Venus.

The only other explanation is that Bush the Elder is dumber than a sack full of bleached-blonde hair.

It's truly an enigma within a conundrum, as logos used to say.

Well, here's the deal. Bubba is basically a dog at heart. If you keep him fed and watered, give him snacks now and then, walk him, pat him on the back, scratch him behind the ears, rub his tummy...wait, he's got interns to do that...let him hump your leg every once in a while...wait, he's got interns to do that...and talk nice to him regularly and tell him what a good boy he is, he's happy. I figure after keeping several generations of canine family members, the Bushes know dogs. And it's a small price to pay to keep Bubba from scratching and howling at the White House gate, and trying to dig his way in.

Maybe, but I try not to be cynical, and the obsession with Hillary makes me a bit tired. I'm happy if these two men can be friends. The world needs more of that.

I expect this Bush/Clinton friendship to dissolve or turn as nasty as Paris Hilton and Nicole Ritchie's friendship, especially around 2007. President Bush will be supporting the Republican nominee and Slick Willie will be supporting Hillary. The campaign will probably get pretty partisan and not condusive to buddy-buddy talk.

Pops must be senile to have forgotten all the evil words and acts against the Bush family that Klintoon spewed to anyone who would listen while he occupied the WH. I'll never forget how such a disgusting human being as Willie Jeff is and was and always will be. If he can charm Bush 41, he can charm anyone. Keep in mind that the ability to charm is one of Satan's the prime attributes.

This is true EXCEPT for one little detail - Hillary.

At the highest level of politics, like entertainment, people run out of available companionship due to their isolation. They all band together no matter what side they come down on

The thing is, at the highest level of politics, they've all pretty much given up values for electablility.

Maybe Barbara Bush is above all of this, and we won't see her cruisin' the mall with Hillary, or whatever.

And why is this good for the country?

Bush's father has always leaned toward the left.

It's probably good for only the powers that be.

I also am wondering if there are any other candidates out there that are not connected to the Bushes or Clintons?

It really isn't all that surprising. Bush One is a nice fellow who doesn't seem to really believe in anything. Clinton is the kind of guy you meet in a bar, have a great time talking to and NEVER take home to meet your wife.

You summed it up perfectly.

Remember, Poppy is the one who publicly resigned from and denounced the NRA because they dared to say nasty things about federal storm troopers. We see the company he prefers.

Could anyone be more elitist?

Add daughters and grandchildren after wife, and I think it is a fair assessment.

Is it possible that Father Bush might just campaign for Hillary? He is giving the clintons plenty of pictures for the coming 2008 elections. It's a slap in the face to all of us who voted for Bush against clinton, Bush against Gore.

I'm sorry, I am repulsed to say the least.
