I live in Prunedale, but I have to go into to Salinas to shop. I went into Auto Zone and all the in-store ads were in Spanish. I know what you mean. I feel like I am the outsider in Salinas.

Let's not even mention the horrors of being female and finding your regular hairdresser unanavailable; the replacement not fluent in English but repeatedly saying he understood; and the results sending you home crying! Happened to me. (A salon in the Westridge center, since you're from the area.)

Last summer I elected to take a three-week Spanish intensive (at the Salinas Adult School). I was amazed to find the majority of students were there under duress because of their jobs. Most were teachers who could not continue without learning Spanish. Learning a new language is challenging enough for an adult in the best of circumstances. But to have to do so at gunpoint (okay, bad Salinas joke) can only be construed as the system shooting itself in the foot (stop me, I've lived here too long! )

I think they had a better shot at getting accepted by Canada. Some immigrants prefer Canada over the US because of false perceptions of our society. I don't think the foreign press does a good job of portraying our society anymore than the MSM does.

Hey, what about all that anti-Californian sentiment up there? I've already been warned by friends who live near Salem.

I have not encountered any anti-CA sentiment myself. Most of the people I have met here have all come from other states, mostly California. I was born here in Oregon, taken to CA at 3 yrs of age, then returned here recently, near where all my pioneer ancestors (from 1848 on, who arrived by wagon train) are buried in a family ranch cemetery. So I have an ace-in-the hole if I run into hostility.

Some blame the Dutch policy of cultural segregation, where groups such as North African Muslims are allowed to attend their own schools and not encouraged to learn the local language or culture.
