OCALA, Fla. — A convicted sex offender apparently committed suicide in despair over signs posted in his neighborhood calling him a child rapist.

Clovis Claxton (search), 38, was found dead by his father with one of the signs beside his body. It was less than a day after his release from a psychiatric hospital.

His mother blames Marion County (search) Commissioner Randy Harris (search) for her son's death. Harris proposed putting up flyers in the neighborhoods of sex offenders to alert neighbors.

I always take joy in the death of child molesters. This story brightened my day more than you will ever know.

NOT true. Folks, go read your state's Meghan's law statutes.

In my state a one-time offender of a 16 year old, without violence or physical contact is a "registered offender" the same as a violent multiple rapist of pre-teens.

For me, this qualifies as " a huge disparity in their offenses and their danger to the community."

I agree in part and disagree in part. I disagree that all Government employees are actually on welfare. The Government needs a slew of legitimate, risk taking, hard working and dedicated employees for numerous operational chores, just like any other operation of similar size.

Military members are a large part of the government work force. They work dirt cheap, considering the sacrifices they make and the risks they are committed to on a daily basis in both peace and war, separations from families, and sacrifices made by their children due to changing schools, leaving old friends and ties, etc. They earn everything the Government ever promised them as well as those promises the government reneges on. The tax payers are getting a hell of a bargain with our able and dedicated troops and their families.

Some in the Military as well as Civil Service BS their way up the ladder-so do some in private enterprise. Most work their butts off and prove their worth, for any promotion they recieve. I speak from experience, having served 20 years in the USAF and 12 in Civil Service.

Patriots have bills to pay too.

Only if one of the sixteen year olds has been raped a second time by the other sixteen year old.

Those who can't learn, deserve to burn.

Whatever God's will concerning Judas committing suicide is irrelevant, God allowed Judas to exercise his own free will, just as he does the rest of us.

The sex offender acted of his own free will-period.

On the other hand, Mr Lucky, there is no record of God ever forcing his will upon anyone except in the cause of good. Even Moses had the choice of refusing God's will, if he felt more comfortable with God's nagging than his blessings.

"In my state a one-time offender of a 16 year old, without violence or physical contact is a "registered offender" the same as a violent multiple rapist of pre-teens."

What state would that be?Was it a statutory crime or against her will? Was this person's neighborhood notified of his presence? Did the state classify him as a category 3 or 4 offender? And if the state's registry makes no distinction btwn. offenders and their crimes, how do you know what his crime was? And, finally, how does one become a sex offender "without...physical contact" of some kind?

Indecent exposure with a minor is also a felony sex crime resulting in registration. And yes the registry lists the crime convicted of, and supervision varies.

My point is they are all labeled "sex offender" and this has become a catch-all tag when it describes a wide range of offenses and degrees of danger to the community.

On these threads we see the effect: kill all the "sex offenders." We need to be more specific and discriminating based on the individual and the crime.

It worries me that we agree on this. But, nontheless, we do.

Is it now our place to exact from him what we estimate as the deficit?

I'll answer your question: No, at least not in the form of vigilantism. What we have to do is change the system which put this tragedy in motion. Yes, I assert that this man's suicide, regardless of what his crimes were, is a tragedy. We the People need to take on the ACLU. It is up to us to put pressure on our legislators and the judiciary to see that sentencing of pedophiles, or sociopaths, or anyone else who will commit more crimes upon release are locked up forever. This man did not simply walk away from prison. He was released.

That does not excuse his crime even if he is a changed person.

I never asserted that he was a changed person, nor did I offer any kind of excuse for his crime. He should have remained locked up. The problem here is in the sentencing.

You'd be surprised on what we agree upon. Science is about the only thing we disagree that I can think of.

Information you people seem to not have bothered to find out

1. the man's crime was exposing himself (not rape or touching a child)
2. he did this ONE time at the age of twenty
3. his mother says he was mentally much younger due to an injury (who knows if that is true)
4. he did not repeat his offense for 18 years
5. he relied on leg braces and a wheelchair to get around
6. the hospital he left was not due to his offense... he said he felt suicidal because of the way people were treating him and Harris' putting forward the idea that signs should be posted in the community, because of this he was involuntarily committed for one day.

This man committed a very minor crime 18 years earlier, and because there have been so many highly talked about crimes against children in Florida, hysteria and misinformation spread causing a man who was physically and mentally disabled to kill himself! He was NOT a child rapist, and he spent his time in jail for the crime he did commit. People need to get their facts straight. What was on that flier was a flat out lie, how would you feel if someone stuck fliers saying you raped children up all over the neighborhood?! It would be no more a lie!
