Former NFL player dies in shootout
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Michael Brim, a former Virginia Union University standout cornerback who spent eight seasons in the NFL, died Tuesday in a shootout with another man. He was 39.
Richmond police said Thursday that Brim had been involved in a dispute with Gary Miles, 42, over a woman. Police found Brim about 10 p.m. with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest in Miles' brother's driveway.
Miles suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, police said. He was listed in serious condition Thursday at VCU Medical Center.
Brim and Miles had gotten into an argument at the American Karate Center where Miles worked earlier Tuesday, said police spokeswoman Cynthia Price. She said Brim followed Miles to his brother's home in a quiet, residential neighborhood in south Richmond.
When Miles got out of his car, Brim shot at him several times, Price said. Miles returned fire, striking Brim in the torso.
Price said Miles' brother returned home to find both cars running and the two wounded men on the ground.
No charges have been filed, and the case remains under investigation.
Brim, a Danville native, was a fourth-round selection of the Phoenix Cardinals in the 1988 NFL draft. He went on to play for Detroit, Minnesota, the New York Jets and ended his career with the Cincinnati Bengals. He suffered a career-ending injury in 1995.
Brim leaves behind a wife and four children.

He was in a dispute over a woman ..... yet he leaves behind a wife and four children. I assume that this woman was not his wife. My heart goes out for his wife and children who are now without a husband and a father, and may have just discovered his dark secret.

"A man's got to know his limitations." Dirty Harry.
Pictures of all the players, not just football types, would be interesting. Sounds like a made-for-TV movie.
And is EVERYBODY packin' now? Especially those w/o CCWs?

Looks like self defense and justifiable homicide. The deceased meeting his end in the driveway of the shooter's brother's house certainly makes it look like he's the one who started things off.

Thank G-d I have more sense now, but years ago I got into a tiff with a guy who pulled out in front of me, causing me to tap the horn in my little Karmann Ghia as I avoided hitting him. He pulled up behind me at the next light and honked. I guess I had always longed to do this: I got out, went back and said "You want to talk to me?" He was a bearded 40ish white guy, considerably younger than me; we exchanged a couple of hostile words and I got back in my car and drove home. He followed me until I pulled into my driveway, got out and stood facing him with arms crossed. He stayed in his car about 10 yards away, yelling "come off your property and we'll talk about it". Finally he drove off, so I didn't have to go in the house and bring out the Smith & Wesson 27 to help me talk about it.

Sounds like a well-deserved dirt nap. An adulterer, betrayer of a wife and children, killed in the act of attempted murder. It's too bad about his kids.

"...I got into a tiff with a guy who pulled out in front of me, causing me to tap the horn in my little Karmann Ghia as I avoided hitting him. He pulled up behind me at the next light and honked..."
ROTFLOL You sure he wasn't gradually increasing speed via foot lightly touching the accelerator, passing you after 15 seconds of dealing with Karmann Ghia lag, then you honked (let's be honest beeped like Road Runner), then he became enraged at your presumptiousness, then stopped the car on the side of the road for a good minute/minute and a half, then accelerated from a dead stop to a slow jog behind you to the next light. I know it could be fuzzy remembering, especially if it was winter and your heater box had holes in it to let in the exhaust.
Karmann Ghias, Triumphs, MGs, and Alfa Romeo: All excellent reasons why the Datsun Zs and the Mazda Miatas became legends in their initial introduction year. They were all cute cars that needed the soul of a Japanese engineer.

Well, I didn't mention my 1965 VW bus experiences - - talk about slow! One cold morning I myself was guilty of entering a 4 lane street too sluggishly in front of some guy driving a Ford Falcon, as I recall, and he gave me the horn blast. We stopped abreast at the next light, he in center lane, I on the right. I gave him a sort of friendly horn tap from that silly bug horn, and he immediately pulled his jacket up around his head, possibly fearing some sort of Nazi attack from me. I guess the devil got into me; I did this a couple more times with the same result. I felt like Mad Max for the next week or so.

First let me state when someone goes to another's place of business and makes a threat on their life it should be taken seriously. There were witnesses present in the Karate Studio when Brim THREATENED Miles life while holding a gun in a paper-bag. The only thing that saved Miles then is a police officer Brim saw in the parking lot. Miles did not own a gun and may have acquired one; whether or not he had a permit to carry a concealed weapon is irrelevant, what would you do? He did everything right; he contacted the police and filed a report and it is obvious the police did not do their job to protect this innocent citizen and this should be investigated. Who cares about the woman, who may or may not have been what this was over. It is apparent that Brim was unstable and on top of this had a record for similar disputes. How about the bullet holes in Miles vehicle? He tried to escape but got hit with one of the many rounds Brim shot at him in the process. Unable to run Miles did the only thing he could do when he was in fear of losing his life; he shot back in self defense. Miles in an effort to change his pattern did not go home and instead went to his brothers house only to be followed and hunted down by this crazed attacker! How about the unethical detective from the Richmond Police who has tried repeatedly to gain access to Miles while he has been fighting for his life and heavily sedated in the ST/ICU at MCV? I mean was he really trying to get a statement from a man who had not been conscious since undergoing numerous surgeries? It appears that this detective is not forth coming with his intentions. It should be an open and shut case of self defense. It is tragic that Brim's family must go on without him, but maybe he should have been in a mental institution instead of running the streets. Maybe Brims assets should be pursued by Miles to help get his life back on track.
