The Senate moved toward approving $81 billion for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan on Thursday in a measure that would push the total cost of combat and reconstruction past $300 billion.

Both the Senate and House versions of the measure would give President Bush much of the money he requested, but the chambers differ over what portion should go to military operations versus other assistance.

The legislation is the fifth emergency spending package Congress has passed for wars since the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. It would put the overall cost of combat and reconstruction efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan — as well as Pentagon operations against terrorists worldwide — past $300 billion.

Your point?

Are you unconfortable that this information is posted on this site? If so, why? Are you ashamed about this spending and feel it should be somehow hidden from view?

Wrote one for close to that on April 15th, much rather it go to free people from tyranny than to pork. Just the differences between those that love freedom and those that love money I guess. Takes all kinds to make the world turn.

Hats off to all Viet Nam vets. We fought a war there, won it, then walked away as if we were the losers.

The US Constitution makes defense a mandate of the federal government. There is no constitutional mandate to wipe every nose in America and to make everyone feel good about himself.

Fuggen' Drudge and his BIG HEADLINES

From the article:
It would put the overall cost of combat and reconstruction efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan — as well as Pentagon operations against terrorists worldwide — past $300 billion.

Yet the 'headline' is 300,000,000,000.00 FOR IRAQ

Even notice the sensational inclustion of .00 cents (which is absurd for any other reason than sensationlism in a figure that big)

My mistake. I took your post as being critical of the person posting this information. I. like you, agree this is money well spent. Freerepublic is my primary news source, and I would hate to see the news posted here to be restricted to specific points of view.

Even if it was $4k per family of 4...

so that 4k on preventative medicine, or 12k on treatment (aka bombs).

Whats your point?

WAR COST USA OVER $300,000,000,000.00

So what?

We won.

If we'd lost, you'd have a reason to gripe.

I am a Viet Nam era vet. I remember when the cost of Nam was being reported at TWO BILLION PER DAY (average).

$730 billion per year? I would love to see the figures that back that up.

Your first comment was "Your point?" which was to the person who posted the article without comment.

I took this to mean you opposed posting this article.

The 1500 soldiers are worth more than the money, that's the real cost. And of course they gave their lives willingly for a cause, they're not martyrs as Liberals try and make them out to be. They're heroes. I'm not going to guess whether it will be worth it, lives are still being lost, and it's still costing us, and I don't know what kind of leadership the Iraqis will choose. I think ensuring women have equal rights in the long run is the greatest challenge. That election was a good start. Muslim tradition dictates that a woman belongs in her home, and it is shameful to leave her place. It's a lot better in Iraq than Iran that's for sure. Hearing about how women are treated in Iran makes me furious.
