A woman has given birth as part of an exhibition in a German art gallery in front of dozens of spectators.
Ramune Gele, 27, gave birth to her first child, a healthy baby girl named Audra, in the DNA art gallery in the capital Berlin.
The father, 29-year-old musician Winfried Witt, who said before the birth "it's a gift to humanity, a once in a lifetime thing", called the experience "an existential work of art".
Johann Novak, manager of the gallery, said the couple wanted to challenge conventional norms.
"It's a bit of test to see if society can cope," he said.
Some 30 members of the public were contacted when Gele went into labour.
But the "live art exhibition" was heavily criticised by some including doctors and religious leaders.
"A birth is an intimate act, and should remain that way," said Stefan Foerner, 40, spokesman for the Church in Berlin.
I'm sure that little Audra will be thrilled to find out when she's 14 or so that her birth was treated like a circus sideshow.
Next, somebody will urinate, defecate or spit in public and the gurus of mediocrity will praise them as mankind's greatest achievements.
Mediocrity has not only be institutionalized -- it has been enshrined by those who no longer have the ability to discriminate anything worthwhile.
"It's a bit of test to see if society can cope," he said.

Looking on the bright side, at least they didn't try to turn the child's conception into a gallery event.
we cope with births in homes, in ambulances, in the back of cars, in emergency rooms, in hospital elevators etc.
However, I wonder if he could "cope" if his baby didn't breathe at birth, or if his wife had a post partum hemorrhage?
Just think of the artistic inspiration if she bleed five pints of blood after she delivered because no one knew how to stop the bleeding.
And I woneder who cleaned up afterward. You want to bet it wasn't this artist?
