Although the ACLU has declared the practice unconstitutional, the Bible is being used as a textbook in classes taught in 300 school districts nationwide, according to a curriculum provider.
About 1,000 high schools in 35 states are using material produced by the North Carolina-based National Council On Bible Curriculum In Public Schools in classes during regular school hours.
The organization says that while the ACLU is "up in arms" about it, there have been no complaints from administrators, teachers, students or parents.

My son took the Bible as Literature in coillege. The philosophy professor used it as a forum to prove that God does not exist. When I aksed him why he took the course, he said he was steering clear of rabid advocates who teach black and women's history to satisfy a humanities requirement in a computer science major.
The ACLU is abusing the Laws and the Constitutional rights of US Citizens.
Well, anyone who tries to use the Bible to prove God does not exist has a real challenge on his hands. Good. Also, you cannot possibly understand English literature if you do not have a fairly indepth knowledge of the Bible. I had a number of students come up to me in college literature courses (I was an English major) to tell me they envied my knowledge of the Bible. It was not a religious thing; they wanted to understand what they were reading in class and were struggling to do so. You also need a grasp of mythology. English departments tend not to require these foundational course any more. A pity.
I couldn't agree more. I was one of those people. I would have been much more prepared for Literature courses if I had been better versed in the Bible. There is so much symbolism and such in literature that parallels the Bible or more generally, Christianity. Fortunately, my instructor (also a minister) was a nice guy who helped me get up to speed. Your post reminded me of him.
The same is true of art history. But then I taught World History and included treatment of the beliefs of the major religions, for the bible is not just literature.
I did the same. I told my academic advisor I'd quit school before I took one class about womens' or black history or any other course that sought to re-write history. She agreed with me, but that was in the days before the PC police.
