WASHINGTON -- When a United States senator publicly declaims, as Ohio's Senator George V. Voinovich did this week, that he is suffering pangs of conscience, my question to him is, have you considered that it might be acid reflex? Consult your physician, Senator Voinovich.
If your problem really is a problem of conscience, consult your psychiatrist. Conscience among the senator's colleagues on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee appears these days to be an abnormality.
The committee is holding confirmation hearings over the President's nominee to head our mission to the United Nations, John R. Bolton. Bolton has already passed through no less than three prior Senate confirmation hearings in his distinguished life as a public servant and survived.
Now, however, the Democrats have come to the conclusion that over the years Bolton has been given to dreadful temper tantrums. At least that is their professed reason for now rejecting his nomination. Frankly, it comes as a surprise to me. I have known him off and on for years, and he always seemed rather mild mannered. Further, one would have thought this shocking condition would have been discovered in earlier hearings.
Now the Democrats have turned up a couple of Bolton's acquaintances who insist anger is his problem. After Senator Barbara Boxer heard from one complainant, she blurted out at Bolton's hearing that he is in need of "anger management lessons." Public remarks such at that sound awfully intemperate to me. Perhaps Senator Boxer is herself in need of "anger management lessons."

it should be noted that Bolton has been confirmed by the senate for various posts FOUR PREVIOUS TIMES.
Sounds like Senator V. got snookered by an accusation from an anti-Bush partisan that has been quickly picked apart.
What a weak-kneed, naive, stupid, foolish, destructive move. I bet he knows it now, too.
I hate to say it, but it does make one wonder whether some of the Republicans are indeed ready to govern.
Well she is definitely in need of something. A new hairdo would be a start. A brain transplant would also be desirable.
This leds me to wonder how many other mentally challenged are serving this country in the Senate. Certainly Byrd and Kennedy have lost it long ago. I'm wondering if Voinivich is stable, his statements reveal otherwise.
Leaky pat Leahy was recently tapped on C-Span (later replayed on Hannity) that Bush will attack Iran for their oil because Jeb Bush has a secret deal with Big Oil to get Iran oil in exchange for the presidency. Newt, after hearing this, called Leahy crazy. Many "leaders" in the Senate worry me.
It does indeed. You never see Dems making such moves against their party. Witness their closing of ranks in defense of the indefensible, Bill Clinton. Whoever the Senate Republican Whip is, he better start whipping those weak-kneed RINO Senators into line!
Oh, dear. He really did say "acid reflex."
The Senate Republicans are looking very spineless, very whimpy, very girlimensch.
How disgusting.
Pity President Bush he has to be saddled with such a limp-wristed "team".
This clown voted for the AgJobs illegal alien amnesty too, what a peach!
What's the deal with voinobitch? Is he a RINO, a bribe-taker, or an attention hog?
Maybe the President should just do an end run and amend the Constitution to do away with the Senate! Or term limits at the least. These people get in and it's a job for life: Byrd, Kennedy, Dodd, Biden and so on (there have been Republicans of this ilk too like Strom Thurmond). Hell, most of them don't even treat it as a job - witness Kerry's missing almost every vote for a year, and Voinovich admitting he missed the Bolton hearings.
I still believe the dems have some incriminating photos or videos of Voinivich which they presented to him. Somebody got to him.
Right. They have horrible ideas (if they have any at all) but they stick together.
When, when, WHEN are the Republicans going to learn that "making nice" never gets them anything, and is only a sign of weakness?! I hate to be so negative, but it's hard to believe they are the same party that routed the Taliban and stood up to Saddam.
Voinovich is a squirrel that appears to not like Bush for whatever reason. he didn't support the tax cuts either.
Maybe we the people should wake up. But that's not likely.
Rush mentioned an article by James Taranto which discusses Voinovich's mistreatment of his own workers. Rush was going to read it after a break, but I wasn't able to listen to it. Does anyone have a link to Taranto's article? I tried Google and did a search on FR but came up empty-handed.
Yeah, where's the damn prufe reeder anyway?
