Lots of Outside Work For a Stay At Home Mom(Melody Townsel)
NRO ^

Posted on 04/21/2005 9:56:23 AM PDT by hipaatwo

I have a little more info on Melody Townsel. When asked to explain why she did not bring allegations against Bolton during any of his previous confirmation hearings, Townsel claims she was “too busy” raising her children and had stepped out of politics.

However, during the time Townsel claims she devoted to raising her children, she was in fact working for the very large public relations firm Ogilvy. She was so committed to her work that she became a senior VP and collected more than $1.5 billion in revenues for the company. In addition, Townsel worked on “whistleblower” issues for the Androvett Legal Media and Marketing firm and ran her own firm, Townsel Communications.

Hat tip to the Classical Values blog.

Just an FYI. Ogilvy & Mather is an Advertising Agency. They do have PR subsidiaries and sister companies.

Do I correctly recall that Watergate burgler E.Howard Hunt was employed by Robert R. Mullen and Company, a firm that had long provided cover for active CIA agents throughout the world and had actively been involved in Bay of Pigs operations?

The owner of the firm, Robert F. Bennett, in addition to his CIA ties, was the Washington representative of Howard Hughes, having taken over that job from Larry O'Brien, the Democratic National Chairman, the target of the Watergate break-in. More recently, he has found other employment within the beltway.

He is NOT the Robert S. Bennett who was the personal counsel for Bill Clinton in the Monica Lewinsky/ Paula Jones matter, but it could well be that the two are related. In any event, the similar names invite confusion.

For the man on the street, PR and Advertising are the same thing but there are marked differences between the two - notably that PR agencies do a lot of "image management" work while Ad Agencies are mainly concerned with advertisement.

There are, I understand, some business reasons related to tax writeoffs of expenses for some of the differences as well. PR experts can of course come in after the fact of an event to put *spin* on the events, while advertising will more generally be in advance of a hoped-for preference for an advertisedproduct sale, though follow-up for repeat sales and continued brand loyalty can be after the fact.

The advertising/marketing side of the newspaper business was that which I did most poorly in journalism school. But that was a long time ago.

Tell George Bush to nominate a new UN Ambassador!
by Barbara Boxer
Wed Apr 20th, 2005 at 17:34:08 PDT

As you know, on Tuesday the Senate Foreign Relations Committee met once more to consider the nomination of John Bolton as UN Ambassador. In the light of many serious allegations against Bolton that have emerged over the past few weeks, I along with the other committee Democrats urged Chairman Lugar to hold off on a final vote until these allegations could be fully explored.
Most observers expected our efforts to fail, figuring that committee Republicans would steamroll Democrats on a party line vote and ram Bolton's nomination through, sending it to the Senate floor for a final vote. But that didn't happen.

Thanks in large part to the efforts of the online community, including more than 37,000 emails you sent to your senators through my PAC website alone, Bolton's nomination was stopped in its tracks. Republican Senator George Voinovich of Ohio joined committee Democrats in urging more careful consideration of John Bolton's nomination, delaying a final vote for three weeks -- and I am so grateful for his support on this critical issue.

Now, it's time for us to do more.

Diaries :: Barbara Boxer's diary :: :: Trackback ::

Clearly, John Bolton is not qualified to be UN Ambassador -- and it's time to tell President Bush to nominate someone else.

John Bolton's nomination is dividing the country. This is a man who has shown nothing but contempt for the United Nations throughout his career. This is a man who has bullied intelligence analysts to try to get them to say what he wants, even when it's not true. This is a man who doesn't get along well with others and, if confirmed, would be entrusted with representing our nation in sensitive diplomatic negotiations at the United Nations.

Surely we can do better. Surely we can find a nominee for UN Ambassador that America can support and get behind -- not someone who divides our country and alienates our allies.

Tell President Bush to send the Senate a new UN nominee -- please sign my petition to the White House now:

http://ga4.org/campaign/new_nominee

Every President has the right to choose senior members of his Administration. But every President also has an obligation to the American people that those nominees are well qualified for the positions they seek.

Clearly, with the nomination of John Bolton, George Bush has failed us. America deserves so much better from our United Nations Ambassador.

If you agree, please join me and tell President Bush to send us a new nominee today!

http://ga4.org/campaign/new_nominee

Thanks so much to all of you in the Daily Kos community for your continued support -- and all of your hard work. I can't do it without you.

In Friendship,

Barbara

It's about time they started researching, although I'd be happier knowing this has reached the RNC.

LOL. She sounds as phony as the day is long. And she wasn't JUST staying home...let's hope the RNC has seen this. I used to send them stuff but had long assumed it wasn't necessary.

Yesterday's proceedings convinced me it IS necessary as they are obviously trying to save money by not researching a darned thing. hehehe

Ad agencies - at least the BIG shops - were formerly "full service" but have now split into specialst shops for the most part. When you talk of an Ogilvy or a Saatchi, you are now talking of a creative shop - the ones making the ads. Each big agency once housed divisions that specialized in research, in media buying and planning and in PR. Research divisions - the hardcore research divisions - were the first to get calved. Next, the Media departments were splintered off to become seperate shops and along with them, production houses, etc. Sometime in the midst of all of this, those agencies which had PR shops in-house realized that PR had always existed on its own elsewhere.

You tend to have a lot of lawyers on staff in PR due to the inherent nature of the work they do which is damage control, image management, and anything that will be fed to the public and press that they want in the news about the client being an individual or corporation. I know that this is an overly simplistic explaination....

As for E.Howard Hunt and Robert R. Mullen, the only person I have ever known who could shine light on the thread there leading to Howard Hughes is dead, unfortunately
