Dean Says Democrats Losing On Abortion ("I Don't Know Anybody In America Who's Pro-Abortion.")
Pioneer Press ^ | April 21, 2005 | Bill Salisbury

Posted on 04/21/2005 9:12:08 AM PDT by MisterRepublican

Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean thinks his party has been wrong on abortion.

In his first visit to Minnesota since becoming the party chairman two months ago, Dean told an audience in Minneapolis on Wednesday night that while his party is right to defend a woman's right to have an abortion, it is wrong to defend the procedure as a moral issue.

"I think we need to talk differently about abortion," the blunt-spoken physician and former Vermont governor told several hundred supporters of the Minnesota affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Dean was the 2004 presidential candidate whose campaign soared to an early lead only to quickly burn out. His campaign transformed politics by using the Internet in new ways to raise money and organize grass-roots supporters. But his support collapsed when party activists decided he was either too liberal or abrasive.

Since the November elections, several Democratic Party leaders, including New York Sen. Hillary Clinton and Dean, have spoken of an effort to alter the party's thinking on certain abortion issues. The large crowd at Wednesday's Minneapolis gathering gave him repeated standing ovations. The speech centered on privacy issues such as the Patriot Act, but it was the topic of abortion that stood out.

The debate shouldn't be about whether abortion is good or bad, Dean said. It should be about whether a woman has a right to make up her own mind.

"We got pushed into a corner by the Republican propaganda machine, forced to debate and defend positions that aren't our positions," he said. "I don't know anybody in America who's pro-abortion."

Too bad the Dems had all those abortions. Massachusetts is on its way to losing two congressional seats.

Very interesting. The Dems realize they aren't going to win the pro-choice argument because of the the partial birth issue. It's too drastic a medical procedure, and the general public rebels against its grossness.

Also, the Republicans didn't back the Dems into a proproganda corner. That's the blame game again. Like the Dems aren't responsible for their actions.

I am surprised that the Dems could figure this out on their own, actually. For decades, the lefties have always hurt their own cause by stupidly insisting on being "for abortion." Whenever this topic came up in a discussion with a left-winger, the first thing I'd tell them was always: "No, you are not for abortion. Nobody is. You do not really think that abortion is a great thing. What you really want is a right for women to perform an abortion whenever she likes, even though abortion clearly is an evil and ugly thing."

It is amazing how many lefties have never thought about this before. They use to think of themselves as the "intellectuals," whose deep thoughts are so full of "nuance," but even this simple distinction never occurs to most of them. Pathetic.

Has anyone else noticed the near total TV news blackout on Dean? Do you suppose it's because every time he opens his mouth, he provides the Republicans with another sound bite for Republican TV ads.

"I don't know anybody in America who's pro-abortion."

I do. Try the people who came up with, and then sold for a profit, the repugnant "I had an abortion" t-shirts. They seem to enjoy it.

Oh, I get it. Instead of saying they're pro-abortion, the Dims ought to say they're "pro-choice."

Gee, that's never been tried before. Good thing the Dims have Dean-dong to think up these things.

The dems are going to change their message on a lot of things, and hope everyone forgets where they really stand.
Hilary may even join the NRA.

"The debate shouldn't be about whether abortion is good or bad, Dean said. It should be about whether a woman has a right to make up her own mind.

Typical Democrat nonsense. We cannot say what we actually believe (i.e. killing babies is okay) so we have to talk around it. They believe the American people are dumb enough to buy in. Enough do for a time but eventually enough catch on (as Abe said you can't fool all of the people all of the time) and they start to lose.

I am glad Dean is where he is the only surprise is that he is even dimmer than he sounded on the campaign trail.

He's the most anonymous national party chairman in history! Terry McAuliffe was a media darling by comparison.

The debate shouldn't be about whether abortion is good or bad, Dean said. It should be about whether a woman has a right to make up her own mind.

This was the propaganda campaign from the very beginning, even before Roe. Call baby-killing CHOICE, so the focus is on the person choosing rather than the deed chosen. At long last, largely thanks to the partial-birth abortion campaign, public attention has finally been directed to the millions of dead babies these monsters have destroyed. I don't think "Dr." Dean can put this genie back in the bottle.

Can someone explain how this would be different than what Dems already do?

They already emphasize the woman's choice and ignore the moral issue of abortion itself.

I don't know where Dean gets the idea his proposal to focus on the woman's choice is some new thing...
