Javelin Impales South Sound Student (and another hit with shot put!)
KIRO TV7 ^ | 4/`9/2005

KALAMA, Wash. -- A javelin impaled a 12th-grader during track practice at a South Sound school on Monday, one of two incidents that left students hurt, KIRO 7 Eyewitness News reported.

One of Dodson's friends snapped a photo of the javelin impaling him, but Dodson says that he was in shock and he did not feel any pain.

"[It]felt weird and exciting at the same time," said Dodson.

His friends were shocked and worried.

"It's not fun to see one of your friends on the ground with a javelin through his chest," said Brent Hopkins, student.

Minutes later, a seventh-grader was hit in the head by a shot put. The athlete was running out to retrieve his shot put and someone threw another one, striking him in the head.

Both students were taken to a hospital and will be OK.

There were coaches supervising the practice when both incidents occurred.

Kalama is on the Columbia, not the Sound. KIRO must think anything south of Tacoma is the South Sound...

You are probably thinking of a softball throw.

I threw an 8 lb shot in 9th grade and the farthest I got it was 18 feet.

I searched and search the West Chester web site news and Google news and could find no mention of this. You'd think an terrible event like that would be news-worthy.

Yeah, think what you will. That pic isn't fake, I was in charge of Jav warmups there, and my friend was racing him to catch the javelin when he got hit. Saw the whole thing, and was standing next to the guy taking the picture.

Somehow, I don't believe you.
The pic looks rather fake, as the Javelin is at the wrong angle to be through his shoulder, it is merely through his jacket.
And, if he was really hit with it and impaled, the javelin would have had to hit him while he was laying down for that pic to be real.

Either that, or he has massively high shoulders with no neck.

Something doesn't wash here.

I kinda agree. I threw the Jav in college and you always worried that you would screw up somehow. Did I step over the throw line? Did I hurt my arm? (usually yes), did I hit tip down (legal throw) and did I run it throgh anyone? If there was any cross wind this could happen, as javelins are well affected by wind. but the picture does not look right unless it was a grazing shot near the top of the shoulder.

Yeah, I myself didn't throw javelins, but the angle is completely wrong for it to have supposedly hit him while he was standing.

Looks more like a setup prank actually.

Darksheare, I could believe the story if you were on the javelin team, since as we know things like this tend to happen around you :-)

BTW I can vouch for Ninja Elite's story:

my friend was racing him to catch the javelin when he got hit

That was me. I was practicing my Shaolin arrow-catching technique. I figured since I've already mastered catching arrows and bullets already, I should try to catch something more challenging. Unfortunately the guy throwing it didn't aim where I was supposed to catch it, so it didn't work out as planned.

Not to mention that there's no blood. If here were impaled by a javelin in that area, he likely would have either the axillary artery or vein pierced. At the very least, he would have some major branches (or tributaries) of those vessels pierced. It would be a very bloody wound. And considering the axillary vessels are surrounded by the nerves of the brachial plexus, there would likely be some nerve damage as well.

There would also be disfigurement due to comminuted fractures of the clavicle or scapula, and possibly the head of the humerus. In short, a person impaled by such a large object in that area would not be "OK."

The kid in the picture does not even appear to be in genuine pain. He's almost smiling.

I notice you have your priorities in the correct order of concern.

Well, yes.
If I were impelling the javelin to flight with merely a thought and a pointed finger, yes the story coul dbe true.
(Stranger things have happened around me.)

LOL!
You shouldve used the butterfly sword javelin cutting technique to cut it into thin slices as it flies at you.
I'm practicing my 'leap onto roof' technique as we speak.
Kinda hard to do that while typing and carrying a computer..

You should check out post 45.

As for your pic, you're showing off again!
Besides, you'll have undead groupies wanting your phone number for that.

Exactly.
There'd be blood everywhere, pooling, and running.
He'd have a nice damp spot on the front of his chest.
