WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) - A woman who was fired by Costco in 2001 for refusing to remove her eyebrow ring has accused the company of religious discrimination, saying she is a member of the Church of Body Modification.

Kimberly M. Cloutier said she wears her eyebrow ring as a sign of faith. She has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to consider hearing the case.

The church, established in 1999, counts about 1,000 members who participate in practices such as piercing and tattooing, according to a December ruling by the First Circuit Court of Appeals, which upheld a trial judge's finding in Costco's favor.

Lynn A. Kappelman, a lawyer for Costco, declined to comment. The company has argued that Cloutier's beliefs are political or social instead of religious.

Cloutier's lawyer, Michael O. Shea, filed a petition Monday asking the Supreme Court consider hearing the case.

The sad thing is, this poster-boy for self-loathing would probably get the job for fear of a law suit.

Many, many, many years ago when the Repo-stomach was not as... well, lumpy... I made the mistake of paying some brain-trust in Boston to out fit it with a slim gold ring.

Damn thing NEVER healed. Finally, several years later, on one unforgettable morning, I took a pair of pliers to it (my roommate was convinced I was insane... and well, I don't really blame her.)

Once the ring was removed, it healed within three hours. The body has its wisdom, you know?

Have you seen the Saturday Night live skit about the roll-on tattoo remover? It's a riot, shows what one of those back tattoos, the ones right above the hip hugger pants line, would look like in 20-30 years when the former slim young lady sporting the tattoo was 45 years old and 50 pounds heavier. It's online somewhere, if you haven't seen it I'll try to find it for you when I get back from picking my kids up from school.

Haven't seen it, but it sounds brilliant. I wonder what a lot of these 20-something chikie poos will do when their fifty, saggy, and covered in less-than-flattering aging, ink?

Luckily, I learned my lesson in my late 20s (the saga of the belly button ring spans the years '96 to '98, actually.)

Still, when I had the Repo-baby two years ago, oddly enough, the small scar from the piercing reacted strangely--all of this melanin collected in it, so it looked like I had one of those weird henna/bindi tattoos there.

In fact, during my c-section, the anesthesiologist argued with me. "No!" he insisted, "that's a tattoo!"

"Uh... no... that's hormonal discoloration..."

"It looks like a sun. It's too perfect to be a random thing. If it ISNT a tattoo, I'd get it tattooed in so the design isn't lost..."

Sigh...
