KANSAS CITY, Mo. --
Police said they arrested a man for spitting on Academy Award winning actress Jana Fonda during a book-signing stop in Kansas City Tuesday night.Fonda, 67, spoke at Unity Temple, in The Plaza shopping district, about her new book, "My Life So Far" and her new movie with Jennifer Lopez called "Monster-In-Law."
At about 9 p.m., police said a man who had been waiting in line for about 90 minutes, passed a book to Fonda and then spit a large amount of tobacco juice into her face.
Thy said the man then ran away and was taken into custody by off-duty officers, who were providing security for the event.
Fonda declined to prosecute the man for allegedly spitting in her face.
Michael A. Smith, 54, was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct, which is a city charge.
The media will give this saturation coverage, and probably tie it into Tom DeLay's "threatening" of judges, and parade her around as an example of how poor helpless liberals are under assault by right-wing thugs for daring to "speak truth to power."
Compare this to the media blackouts, chuckles and titters and sneering about how conservatives can't take what they dish out that results when people like Coulter, Horowitz and Kristol are hit with pies and salad dressing by members of the "tolerant" left.
I hate to see our guys resort to such liberal tactics. OTOH, ya gotta love it!
I wouldn't mind seeing Flounder throw up on her like Dean Wormer.
Flame me if you must, but any man who spits on a woman is no man.
If that's an analogy for what Hanoi Jane is doing that's worth a spit in the eye.
She's not voicing an opinion she's using what she did back then to hawk a book
now for money and fame. (ptui)
Jane Fonda should have been tried and convicted as a traitor. Spitting on her is a mild rebuke for what she did. A little spittle consitutes an appropriate and warranted response.
I don't know what "side" you are talking about, but many Americans, regardless of political party, despise her. The Holzers' book, "Aid and Comfort," makes a detailed and compelling case that Fonda should be in jail rather than on an obscene book tour making money and revising history.
I applaud Mr. Smith for his restraint and pithy response. I would hazard a guess that he is a Vietnam vet, like myself. Your tut-tut response doesn't sit well with me. Fonda deserves to be shunned and reviled for her actions along with her words. It is not a matter of civil discourse.
If somebody did that to me I would want to do more than press charges.
Sorry Doug, I have every intention of urinating on her grave DURING her funeral. That will be for all the guys I left behind in Viet Nam, because they can't.
Back in late 60's...I watched a young guy in uniform get spit on at a street corner, he did'nt flinch....no sympathy for Mizz Fonda!
Hate the action but I can understand why he did it. She shouldn't be free to be spit upon. I wonder if her minions spit on him when he arrived home from Vietnam. If he had the money his defense could be interesting.
No woman would have done the things Jane has done, thus she is exempt from woman status. Actions have consequences.
This guy could be a Dem for all we know. I don't think this is a our side their side case but rather pent up anger from a 'NAM vet.
What a touching, heart warming story amidst all the negative news stories.
I don't know about you...and I know from your profile page you probably try to adhere to the "love your enemies" concept...but nontheless...IMHO, I would guess it would take a heroic amount of restraint and integrity for a Nam vet not to have done what that man did. Hanoi Jane, like John Kerry; along with their anti-war and anti-American propaganda, caused many people, like this man, to die, prolong suffering, and/or be submitted to gross disrespect upon returning from the war. They are subhuman people who deserve everything that it coming towards them.
I certainly can. He did what a lot of veterans have wanted to do in the past.
The leftists also feel 'right' when they assault people with pies or whatever slop they attack them with.
If this guy were actually to turn out to be a former POW, then he might have a legitimate, personal grievance.
Ugh. Not good. This is something a liberal would do.
"No woman would have done the things Jane has done, thus she is exempt from woman status. Actions have consequences."
I'm not persuaded by what you say. This guy could have spoken out to her, read a statement to her, whatever. But in my experience, men who spit on people (let alone on women) have serious mental issues. I'll simply ask, would John Wayne ever have spit on anyone? Even Tokyo Rose? I doubt it.
