It's funny how that happens, isn't it? Benedict XVI isn't even the pope for 24 hours and the liberal media, still bitter over Bush's victory, have already begun to smear his character and claim he is somehow to blame for Kerry's defeat. If you hit most of the major media outlets, he's already been termed an 'arch-conservative' and the left-wing bloggers are already calling him a 'fascist'.
Apparently, the far left just doesn't get it. Then again, have they ever?

I'll never be a catholic but so far this man is impressive. I was particularly impressed by the reporting that stated he was unlikely to crossover in worship. I respect that stance a great deal.
I respect someone that stands by their Church and the beliefs of that Church.
And I respect someone that is unapolgetic about God's word, the harm of humanism, etc..

Frankly, it seemed amusing at the time, but I think that whole episode probably helped Kerry more than it hurt him; it made the guy seem like a martyr. The Catholic Church works better when the clergy doesn't get involved in partisan politics.
Ratzinger never did this.
They obviously missed a more ominous word: 'Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build My Church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.'

On the other hand, should the church leadership have kept their own counsel on the issue -- studiously ignoring a matter that was a tenet of faith?
They had every right to speak out. Upholding your doctrinal standards isn't necessarily "partisan politics" -- it's defending the faith.
