HYATTSVILLE, Md. - A nun who was ordered by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger to stop ministering to gays and lesbians called his election as pope "devastating" for those who believe the Catholic Church needs to be more tolerant on social issues such as homosexuality. advertisement Sister Jeannine Gramick said the choice of Ratzinger, who as the Vatican's guardian of doctrine silenced her and Father Robert Nugent in a 1999 order, will likely prevent the church from "moving into the 21st century and out of the Middle Ages." needs to be more tolerant on social issues such as homosexuality.

Homosexuality is not a "social issue" its a self destructive hedonist behavior that's a result of a mental disorder.

Yep, and that is the way the Church has always wanted it. Remember, John Paul II was the third longest serving out of 264 Pontiffs. A Pope who only has a decade or so of expected leadership is historically who is chosen.

Imagine that--a Church that is still around after 2000 years doesn't change with the political winds... wierd...

"...will likely prevent the church from "moving into the 21st century and out of the Middle Ages." "

Being a practising homo was wrong when I was a child and was still wrong when I was in college. But now it's OK? and we're self-righteously talking about our enlightend pov and how our opponents are keeping us in the Middle Ages?

Perspective please you mouthy nun. It's not about being permissive, not about being taken up with the now, all in the name of undisciplined, sinful tolerance. It's about following God's will not your every lustful desire.

Good grief!

Not a silly former NUN.. a Nun who probably is homosexual herself and thanks to libertine US policy got into the order even though she should not have in the first place.

Think I'll go grab a Miller Lite since that's all we have on hand.

Miller time?

Heck let's make it a virtual "Bavarian Bier" in honor of the former Cardinal Ratzinger, now Benedict XVI!

God's call to repentance is for everyone ... poofters most definitely included.

Very few folks actually define their identity by their particular sins ... and then try to convince the world (and themselves) that their sins are "gifts from God".

I'm just curious as to why they didn't pick a younger conservative as pope.

As to why, you'll have to ask the Holy Spirit :)

Sure, they may need to choose a new Pope in a shorter time period than with a younger selection, but the group of Cardinals is not going to get any less conservative with Pope Benedict XVI picking the new ones! Not to mention accepting a few resignations, we hope, from less able leaders like D.C.'s McCarrick.

Actually the Church HAS changed with the political winds.

Priests and Popes used to be able to get married.

Many of the Popes and Cardinals throughout history have been very corrupt.

The Pope was a king a military ruler up until the 1800s.

I'm so delighted to be sent back to the nineteenth century, aren't you? I am doubled over with laughter rereading her words of dismay.

I'm with you.

Homosexuals should be ministered to, but not in a "you're gay, its cool with us!" way. They need to be taught not only God's love, but God's laws. Just because you feel it doesn't mean its ok.

All this evil and good - heaven and hell stuff is all so judgemental.

Why can't God be more tolerant and progressive?

God love's all his children, but that does not mean God APPROVES of all their activities. Violators of his word never seem to be able to figure that one out.

God loves the Rapist, does this mean the church should accept rape? God loves the Pedophile, does this mean the church should accept it? God loves the murderer, does this mean the chuch should accept it as normal?

Please.

Homosexuality is by and large a self destructive mental disorder.. show me one Psychological study ever done that proves otherwise.
