Sorry I don't have a link, but this local affiliate doesn't publish its stories on the web. Basically, a group of 3 young Texas Tech University students have formed a real estate development company that will be developing a tract of land in Lubbock, Texas, that will feature deeds that ban registered sex offenders. They have checked this out with a lawyer and it is perfectly legal as sex offenders are not a "protected class". The ban will follow the deed. If a home owner or someone living in a home there suddenly becomes a registered sex offender, then the offender will be forced to live elsewhere or the home owner will be forced to sell the home and land at 85% of its value. The homes will be 1500 to 1800 sq. ft (I'm guessing probably $110,000 to 125,000 max in this market) which is a typical "young family with children" home around here. I'm listening and typing at the same time, so I'm probably not getting all of it down. There is information about the company available at http://www.isinvestments.com
TOPICS: Culture/Society; US: Texas
KEYWORDS: deedrestrictions; housing; propertyrights; realestate; restricteddeeds; sexoffenders
I think this is great. 3 young entrepreneurs seeing a need and filling it. Isn't this what America is all about? Of course it is. Which is why the ACLU will HATE it.

I'm sure that in the end they will spend more on lawyers in futile attempts to defend thier 'CCRs' than they will make in profit.

I have trouble believing this will hold up, if I told you a couple of years ago that men that wanted to use the ladies room (because they supposable feel like a woman) would be a protected class you would not have believed it.
It seems every nut case in this country can find a court to write a new law for them.

Im not sure how to read this.
Home developers in Texas are desperate for sales... or having sex offenders in your neighborhood in Texas is a huge problem.

This is kind of rediculous. . .will they give psychological tests to future buyers; so as to insure there are no stealth candidates -
offenders-in-waiting, so to speak?
Where will these people shop? In 'Offender-free' zones?
This idea, is just more than a bit 'nannyish'; albeit, private enterprise. . .

They have checked this out with a lawyer and it is perfectly legal as sex offenders are not a "protected class".So they aren't citizens as defined by the 14th Amendment?
