WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The White House stands "strongly" behind Tom DeLay amid ethical questions over the House majority leader's fund- raising and overseas trips, deputy chief of staff Karl Rove said Monday.
Rove, the strategist who ran President Bush's two presidential campaigns, said DeLay, a Texas Republican, has been the target of partisan attacks by "desperate" Democrats.
"Tom DeLay is going to continue to be a strong and effective majority leader for the Republicans in the House," he said on CNN's "Inside Politics."
Though at least two congressmen have suggested DeLay should give up his leadership post until ethics questions are resolved, GOP leaders have backed the majority leader.
Former Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott said Sunday the White House needed to speak up on DeLay's behalf.
"I do think the White House needs to remember that people who fight hard for you as a candidate and for your issues as a president deserve your support," the Republican from Mississippi said on ABC's "This Week."
Bush said last week that he looked forward to working with DeLay, but Lott told ABC that "I wish it had been more, frankly." (Full story)

I guess they'll have to go back to starving disabled people now.
Great news.
Good.
The Democrats succeeded in bringing down Trent Lott because he had already betrayed his own party and was a weak majority leader. The Democrats did us a favor by giving us an excuse to oust him from office.
None of that is true of Tom DeLay. The only Republicans who have tried to undermine him are RINOs and weaklings. He has strong support from the base. I'm glad to see that Rove undrstands that. If the Republicans were to let the media bring down DeLay, they would seriously weaken themselves, and it would only be a matter of time before an emboldened media chose another victim.
Good, but this shouldn't be the end of it. Retaliation should be exacted against both Rats and traitor Pubbies when the time is right.
Take no prisoners. Scorched earth ...
Or telling Grandma's they have to set aside some money this month for a case of dog food.
In the end, the Democrats better be doing more than crying "uncle".
ROTFLOL!
You're funny tonight.
Let me stealthly ping you to a hilarious thread.
Hold on.
YAH!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the first time I can remember Republicans standing up for each other. It is a great relief to see my favorite politicians (Rove, DeLay, and the President) do this.
Stated earlier that when the W.H. felt this silliness had gone on long enough, they'd step in. Just as they did with Rummy. It's their style.
It had gone on just long enough for the Democrats to look foolish, Reps to organize a united front saving the few that were exposed for what they really are, and for Delay to emerge even more powerful than before the attack.
Dems will never learn. Attacking Bush only made him stronger where the attacks were without merit. Ditto for Delay.
Good. This is probably meant to counter reports from MSM that WH was unhappy with Delay's "spin"
Dang, Navy!
I don't know if its the Shiner...or just an evil side.....but I like that idea.
bump
I kind of got that feeling.
If this got to annoy Bush or others at the White House, they were just going to make it clear that backed Delay, but other wise, they didn't see this as a big deal and didn't real care, it got annoying, so they said, we ain't pushing him.
Honestly, this whole thing attacking Delay is just a waste of the democrats time and money. Delay is not going to get voted out in sugar land, more then half the country doesn't know who he is, and of the folks who do know, I'd bet a large chunk of the minority wouldn't recognise him if was walking around in a pair of blue jeans.
I also doubt most "vulnerable" republicans were really worried to, Delay knows how to play "catch and release" as good as anyone, so these guys could do whatever they want in their own elections, the dems keep forgetting, your running against a canidate, not delay, and if that guy wants to support or bash, or say, he'll do what he's gotta do to get the majority party to help his district including working with Delay, so be it, then it leaves the dems, with a boogyman, who can't be attached (or recognised) to anyone anyway.
This was a waste of time, and a waste of their cash.
I think Bush and Rove wanted to wait long enough to see if the dems would hang themselves---through one more Sunday Talk show cycle, to let them hyperventilate all over the airwaves, and then just calmly let the other Republican know, that enough is enough---
Delay's our guy, and we stand by him (and ya'll better also).
Right and for how long?
