Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said Friday that his party would wield the Terri Schiavo case against Republicans in the 2006 and 2008 elections, but for now needed to stay focused battling President Bush on Social Security.
"We're going to use Terri Schiavo later on," Dean said of the brain-damaged Floridian who died last month after her feeding tube was removed amid a swarm of political controversy.
Dean, who has called congressional intervention in the Schiavo case "political grandstanding," singled out House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) for his leading role in the matter.
"This is going to be an issue in 2006, and it's going to be an issue in 2008," Dean told about 200 people at a gay rights group's breakfast in West Hollywood, "because we're going to have an ad with a picture of Tom DeLay saying, 'Do you want this guy to decide whether you die or not? Or is that going to be up to your loved ones?' "
Dean, a practicing physician until he became governor of Vermont in 1991, added: "The issue is: Are we going to live in a theocracy where the highest powers tell us what to do? Or are we going to be allowed to consult our own high powers when we make very difficult decisions?"
Before Schiavo's death, the Republican-controlled Congress passed legislation giving her parents the right to take action in federal court to have her feeding tube reinserted, but no judge intervened. Schiavo's husband had fought for years to withdraw the tube, arguing that she would not have wanted her life extended.

Sometimes when I'm not sure how I feel about something, I look to the liberals. If they are for or against, it's a good indicator for me. This senator is a threat to them or they wouldn't be on the attack. I'm watching to see which republicans do not stand with TD. They are the ones that will not get my vote. A lot of democrats by family that I know are pro life and watching their guys/gals too.
Yeah, maybe Dean will even advance Michael Schiavo as a Dem candidate for something---perhaps as a county coroner, or maybe as a judge.
Oil is gonna become a very BIG issue. People are going to demand answers. In the meantime, oil prices are undermining the world economy, cauing ripples in the U.S. stock market and creating new tensions in Asia. Oil is the primary cause of the current rift between Japan and China. Some sleeper issues are the U.S.-Mexico border, illegal immigrants and drug smuggling. If the Democrats start shouting about our open borders, look out Nellie!
Judge Greer should have the Democrats checked for brain dead idiots and rule accordingly. He could wipe out the democrat party.
Wow! I can see the DNC retaking the White House and congress back with an ad like this:
Cripples! Useless, unwanted cripples! They are a scourge and a waste of life. None of them want to live. Would you? Bet you'd rather experience the euphoria of starvation wouldn't you? We would too. But evil Republicans want these people taken care of, by of all thigs, loving family members. Makes you want to puke doesn't it? Thats why you need us. The New improved DNC! Elect us, and get rid of wastes of life like Terri Schivo!
We are the NEW DNC! Just like the NAZI party, only we really hate the Military!

Yeah!
That's the way to connect with pro-life values voters.
Dean is a great barometer for us. He's the guy who would go all in on a 10-6 off suit. The Democrats actually ended up looking good in all this. They would be well-advised not to overplay their hand.
They are buying into the bogus wording of biased polls!!
WONDERFULL!!!!!!!!!!
I'm surprised Time or some such magazine hasn't named MS as "husband of the year" yet. Maybe that issue comes out later this year.
I have a campaign slogan for Dean's campaign:
When you die you'll vote democrat, whether you want to or not.
Dean following the McAuliffe playbook. Genius!!! ;-)
