Jimmy Carter: "in rich countries like ours, we really don't give a damn" about aid to poor nations

Carter: rich states "don't give a damn" about poor

ATLANTA, April 14 (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter on Thursday harshly criticized his own country and other wealthy states for being stingy with foreign aid and said in rich countries "We really don't give a damn."

In a speech to a human rights conference in Atlanta, Carter said increasing financial assistance was critical to battling malaria, AIDS and other common diseases that disproportionately affect the poorest parts of the world.

"Unfortunately, in the rich countries like ours, we really don't give a damn," said Carter, who was president from 1977 to 1981 and who won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

He especially criticized the United States for failing to follow other Western nations which are increasing spending.

Although America tops the foreign aid donor list in dollar terms, it falls behind the Netherlands, Canada and many other smaller, less affluent nations when contributions are measured on a per capita basis.

U.S. foreign aid is approximately 0.18 percent of gross national product, the lowest of any G-7 nation and far below a 0.7 percent United Nations target that 22 of the world's developed nations have agreed to meet by 2015.

A handful have met the goal, while others such as Germany and Great Britain insist they will achieve it.

"We have not budged so far," lamented Carter, who has spearheaded efforts through his non-profit Carter Center to eradicate diseases in the developing world, including Guinea worm and onchocerciasis, also known as river blindness.

Governments don't really produce anything anyway. It's the people who really make things happen.

The Carter Center site claims so much success, there is not much left for wealthy countries to do.

Quote from Carter Center ---"In this way, the Center has strengthened democracies in Asia, Latin America, and Africa; helped farmers double or triple grain production in 15 African countries; mediated or worked to prevent civil and international conflicts; intervened to prevent unnecessary diseases in Latin America and Africa, including the near eradication of Guinea worm disease; and strived to diminish the stigma against mental illness. A not-for-profit, nongovernmental organization, the Center's work is supported by donations from individuals, foundations, corporations, and countries".

I think MEEEEster carter mistakes our indifference to him for indiference to others.

He should shut up and just close the Carter center down.

His carter center is just a lame democrat party effort to have a "shadow state department."

He seems to completely ignore what American missionaries to third-world countries do, not to mention donations from private organizations. Guess it only counts if it's guvmint assist...

Anybody have an estimate of what it cost the U.S. to save the world's sorry a**es in WWI, WWII, the Marshall Plan, Korean war, Vietnam (or should I say "French Indochina"?), Desert Shield/Storm, Afghanistan, Iraq...

Anyone care to estimate how many U.S. $$ actually defend all the nations cited by Jimmeh who don't maintain any defense? What a miserable ... he is. Liberalism really is a disease, isn't it?

In a sensible country like ours, few give a rat's patoot for the imbecile opinions of Jimmuh Peanut as was demonstrated by his being politically slaughtered by Ronaldus Maximus in 1980. He even lost Taxachusetts.

Maybe if the poor countries of the world change the way they operate and effect policies that will benefit their country instead of fatting up the leader's wallet?

Carter is just applying orwellian doctrine.

Repeat a lie a few thousand times and the MSM will call it fact.

The only good thing about Carter, is that because of him, we got Ronald Reagan.

I will never forget the night Reagan was elected-- my late 1st wife & I were staying at the Atlanta American, which was Carter's headquarters.

We had heard all the propaganda polls about how Carter was going to win a landslide, and came back that night ( from the Merchandise Mart, on business ) very dejected... walked into the lobby... and Carter's people were milling about, downtrodden and making nasty remarks like, "well, at least bribery will be back in style."

Sore Loosermen, even then.

God bless Ronny- I sure miss that man.

I don't know, I still think Bubba was the worst. Giving China our technology is one of many, many reasons. But dumb Bubba also gave us Hitlery and what could be a scarier legacy than that?

This man is a drooling idiot. Thanks to him the Middle East became a hot bed of radicals who kill, starve, and abuse the poor. I guess he thinks it's OK as long as they say they give a damn.

Jimmah needs to do some Bible study.

"Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? THOU HYPOCRITE, FIRST CAST OUT THE BEAM OUT OF THINE OWN EYE; AND THEN SHALT THOU SEE CLEARLY TO CAST OUT THE MOTE OUT OF THY BROTHER'S EYE." -The Sermon on the Mount
