Howard Dean, the chief screamer and chairman of the Democratic National Committee, thinks he has the formula for a Democratic revival: Jesus, guns and balanced budgets. He told Arkansas newspaper columnist John Brummett on the eve of a meeting of state chairmen in Little Rock that he wants Democrats to speak up for "values." "We need to talk about Christian values and how they're Democratic values," he said. "Jesus taught to help the least among us. He spent his life reaching out to the disenfranchised. The Democratic Party is the party of that value, not the Republican Party."

Dean is preaching this mantra everywhere he goes now. Of course when they talk values, they never offer anything but unconditional surrender to religious conservatives on social and cultural issues. Its basically a matter of the Dems promising more by way of govt services just as long as socially conservative/economially less-conservative voters accept judicial rule.
You'll never hear Dean say that perhaps it isn't right for the Sup Court to impose a northeast, elitist, leftwing policy on the entire nation.
And as the article correctly points out, it is hard to reconcile the Dems being 'Christian-friendly' when their base is made up of the most virulently anti-Christian groups like the ACLU and People for the (socialist) American Way.
But the GOP/Right should not take these efforts lightly. There are people who only vote GOP because of social issues, and if the Dems can fool enough people then they may be able to carry some Southern states. They've managed to do so for Senate with people like Landrieu and Lincoln.
Embrace the ideals but reject the messenger as offensive. Interesting.

Can we say "Pandering". Christian values mean spreading the Gospel, not alienating people. As long as the democratic party continues to deliberately alienate Republicans, they won't be able to win over their votes. Reagan won democrats over to his side and won by a landslide. I guess Howard Dean wants to alienate them and lose by landslides
This is the same Dean who thinks the Book of Job is found in the New Testament.
This is the same Dean who lectures about loving thy neighbor, but at a rally when confronted about his attacking President Bush, retorts that "George Bush is not my neighbor"
The whole thing, at least to me, shows the general ignorance of the libs in this country. They think the GOP advances by bowling over religious folks, and basically believe that anyone who is a believer is a bumbling doofus. As a result, they think cheesy tributes to Jesus will be enough to bowl them over.
Others have already hit on the matter of rendering to Caesar's what is Caesar's, so I'll take a different tack. Christ urged folks to help the poor, but the emphasis was on the individual doing good with a song in the heart. He never told anyone to hollar at the doors of the King's palace in order to force their neighbor to pay the poor man in the form of higher taxes.
The Democrats loathe Christians yet their attempting to appeal to them at the same time.
Jesus spoke about keeping the Commandments but I'm sure the Democrats won't be mentioning them during their campaign of deception.
Jesus never taught anyone to perpetually stew in their own resentment and envy toward anyone with a dollar more than you. He taught that in this world you will have tribulation and it therefore makes no sense to go on Oprah and wail and cry about how the snake that bit you didn't come back with a First Aid kit.
Democrats, Jesse Jackson in particular, have said that Jesus' parents were turned away by selfish innkeepers who said there was no room at the inn. They neglect to mention that Joseph and Mary wouldn't have had to be out on the street in another town in the middle of the night if it weren't for the tax hike imposed by the progressives up in Rome.
Most of all, Jesus did not teach anyone that God doesn't exist -- or that he himself either didn't exist or if he did, he was just a gay cynic proto-socialist philosopher and not God incarnate. Nor did he teach that it doesn't matter a whit what you do in your personal life as long as you vote for the right people and give lip service to the right causes via bumperstickers on your car. The Democratic Party is the party of those values, not the Republican Party.

1. Propose legislation mandating that all public schools must refer to Federal Holidays by their proper name and objectively teach at least one hour of class time that week each year on the background of those Holidays. Include that the right to celebrate any Federal Holiday in a public school would also not be infringed.
2. Propose legislation that would ensure the right of any public school, community, State or Federal building or park space to display any historical document/statement it so desires, be it of a religious nature or not.
3. Propose legislation that would ensure the right of any religious group to use any public space and/or buildings for the purpose of peaceful assembly if time/space permit.
Yes, the great values of abortion, gay marriage, socialism, keeping people poor so they will vote Democrat, racism, worshiping at the alter of the UN, blame America first, etc... great values indeed.
I am very glad that the Democrat party has the Kook in Chief as their leader and spokesman, Howard Dean.
If a Republican said these words, the lovely and gracious Ms. Dowd would be screaming her head off about a theocracy.
I recently watched Dean speak. He is a good public speaker, but firmly believes that the Dems are losing because they can't "define" the debate, not that there is anything wrong with their platform or ideals.
Most relevant to this article was his response to a question. The questioner referred to Dean's having left his church over their (opposition to? support of? I forget) the construction of a bike path. He (humorously) asked Dean what the Bible or Christianity had to say about bike paths. Before responding, Dean tried to get in a zinger saying that "the Bible probably says as much about bike paths as it does about gays."
He obviously intended to mock Christian social conservatives who use the Bible as a reason to be anti-gay. But even I know that the Bible actually does mention homosexuality, several times. It really drove the point home that Dean really is not familiar with Christianity. I don't really care about what religion a leader chooses to follow, but completely faking it to try and "steal" votes from people who don't pay enough attention to vote on important matters is pretty low.
