Rep. Tom Tancredo said it is 'probably not the worst idea' for embattled House Majority Leader Tom DeLay to step down while he deals with ethics allegiations.
Stepping into a swirling Washington controversy, the Littleton Republican said he doesn't think the current accusations against DeLay amount to much. But Tancredo said that from a personal perspective, DeLay has handled the ethics issue 'stupidly.'
'I don't think we should try and oust him,' he said in an interview Thursday at the Capitol.
'Right now, I would not encourage him to leave. If he chose to resign as majority leader until these matters are resolved, that's probably not the worst idea.'
Tancredo would be the first fellow conservative to come close to such a suggestion, although he and the poweful Texas are not close political allies.
Meanwhile, 10 former GOP members of Congress, including one from Colorado, joined in a letter to house leadership to say that they believe ethics rules were revised this year in an effort to protect DeLay from investigation and that the changes must be reversed to restore 'confidence in the people's House.'

Oh, I want to watch this.
-DeLay has handled the ethics issue 'stupidly.'-
Make that the entire GOP, and I'm right there with him.
This should be interesting as the same people defending DeLay also love Tancredo -- this is get some popcorn, some coca cola, and sit back and watch time!
Comments from a Republican in a liberal newspaper. I'll wait for a transcript.
So much for Reagan's '11th Commandment...'
Stick to what you're good at - the border security nightmare. Leave DeLay alone and stay out of that kind of politics. I like you and all but you're still a bit out of that league.
Et tu, Tancredo? At least he's not looking like an opportunist. *Cough!*
"So much for Reagan's '11th Commandment."
That's why we have so many wimps and RINOS!
Get mean and nasty!
Delay has tried to shut Tancredo up about illegal immigration and other issues. They're no friends.
Tancredo is the first Repub Representative to say this. Before it was Senators. Since Tancredo's agenda are anathema to Delay he isn't losing anything.
Tancredo running in 2008?
Of course.
Some folks might group me into that category. I like DeLay in a broad, overall sense (he's pretty solid all around), but I like Tancredo primarily for his stance against illegal immigration.
"But Tancredo said that from a personal perspective, DeLay has handled the ethics issue 'stupidly.'"
Well yeah, but add the entire GOP to it.
Roger that Spiff ~ great observation ~ Bump!
It's official: Tancredo is nothing but a media whore whose one-note border rantings generates tons of cash to his PAC.
ALLEGATIONS. If the Dems manage to force Tom DeLay to step down, how long will it take before the NEXT conservative Republican leader gets hit with "ethics allegations" from a liberal Dem prosecutor back home? Tancredo is a f%#@ing moron for saying this!
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- House Speaker Dennis Hastert said Thursday that he fully supports his embattled Majority Leader Tom DeLay and will do so until it's proven he violated the chamber's rules by accepting trips from lobbyists. In an off-camera interview with CNN, Hastert also accused Democrats of fanning the flames while at the same time blocking the House ethics committee from formally organizing because it might clear Delay of possible ethical violations.
Hastert didn't hesitate when asked if DeLay has his "100 percent support."
"Mr. DeLay does, right. Until it's proven he's actually done something that's broken the rules and discredited himself and this Congress," the Illinois Republican said as he walked from the House floor to his office.
