Recent information from ongoing investigations, detentions, and emerging threat streams strongly suggests that al-Qaeda has considered using the Southwest Border to infiltrate the United States. Several al-Qaeda leaders believe operatives can pave their way into the country through Mexico and also believe illegal entry is more advantageous than legal entry for operational security reasons. Admiral Loy warned that the U.S.Canadian Border has vast and difficult terrain that could provide good passageways for terrorists to sneak into our country and wreak havoc."

IMHO, it would be a far simpler thing to secure the Mexican border if we really cared to do so. The first line of defense should be those who know the area best: American Landowners. These are the folks who've been the victims of border incursions for decades, with little or no help from our government. The thing to do is to militarize the border with the national guard for each state. THEN train the landowners along the border to use military radios. When they see intruders, simply whistle up a gunship mission and send in the Apaches or a Blackhawk full of troops. That's what we used to call wise use of indigenous forces

Excellent idea. Both North and South border states in many places have extremely sparse populations, which enables smugglers and illegals free access to our country. Remember a few threads back the pictures of tents? It's never left my memory for exactly that reason. People sneaking in, eating wild game and living in wooded seclusion - how difficult would that scenario be?

Montana boasts over 30 million acres of state and federal lands, nearly one third of the state. Much of that land provides excellent hunting opportunities

Texas acres of land owned by the federal government in 2000 (2,307,171)

State by State Government land ownership

Basically, lots of land to camp on......and a shortage of people to check on and maintain it (and that's where your plan would come in handy ExSoldier!). I don't understand why our government thus far does not embrace the well-qualified people willing to do work our government cannot or is unable or unprepared to do.

Protecting our borders IS a must and lip service just is not the answer.
