The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

We now know more about an alleged attack that triggered an increased national threat level last summer.

That's when U.S. officials said they had uncovered a plot targeting financial institutions. The plot involved bombs, banks and British nationals.

The detail was startling, the targets enormous. They included financial buildings in Washington, New York and New Jersey.

Uranium Missing from NJ Lab (4/19/05)

TEANECK, NJ-April 19, 2005 — Experts say it's not enough to make a dirty bomb or harm anyone.

But the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is investigating why a small amount of enriched uranium powder is missing from a Teaneck laboratory.

LeDoux and Company reported little more than three grams of powdered uranium and aluminum missing last Wednesday. NRC investigators believe the powder was thrown in the trash and is probably in a landfill in Pennsylvania or New York.

NRC spokesman Neil Sheehan says while the missing powder does not pose a threat, it is still important to make sure such material is tracked properly. Sheehan says the NRC hasn't ruled out the possibility of some kind of fine or enforcement action.

Girl Dies from Flesh–Eating Bacteria (NY - 4/19/05)

NEW YORK (AP) - April 19, 2005 — A 10-year-old Bronx girl has died from flesh-eating bacteria, a rare and invasive form of the same bug that causes strep throat and scarlet fever.

Nathera Masoud had never suffered any serious health problems before contracting necrotizing fasciitis, an infection caused Group A streptococcus bacteria, the Daily News reported Tuesday. She died Friday......

Nathera first started feeling ill around April 2 when she complained of a sharp pain near her armpit, her mother said. Her condition worsened, and tests at Montefiore Medical Center on April 12 confirmed that her tissues were under attack from the bacteria. Three days later she was dead.

Egyptian Police ID 4 Cairo Bomb Plotters

Apr. 17, 2005:

Egypt's Interior Ministry on Sunday identified four men it accused of training a bomber who killed three tourists and himself in a Cairo bazaar.
A ministry statement said the teenage bomber, Hassan Rafaat Ahmed Bashandi, "was affiliated with an extremist group that included four members" who trained and recruited him.

The group also prepared the explosives that detonated near the Khan el-Khalili bazaar, a historic part of Cairo popular with tourists, according to the statement.

The ministry said three of the suspects were in custody, with a fourth at large.

Bashandi, who was 17 or 18 years old, was attempting to plant the bomb a concoction of TNT in a nail-filled leather bag when it exploded prematurely. He was killed, along with an American and two French tourists.

Police arrested 30 people, including Bashandi's mother and 19 relatives. His mother has since been released.

The government said from the outset that the blast was the act of an individual or a small group, hoping to limit damage on Egypt's tourism industry.

Akram Mohammed Fawzi, the owner of a marble workshop, was accused of planning and financing the attack, the statement said. Two neighbors of Bashandi, Tarek Ahmed Al-Sayed and Reda Sayed Ahmed, also were identified.

The fourth suspect was identified as Ashraf Saied Youssef.
