The Threat Matrix

The title refers to a daily report given to the president of the United States detailing the most serious terrorist threats against the country. To tackle those threats, the government has formed a top-notch task force to infiltrate the terror cells and cut off the danger.

"Every morning, the president receives a list of the top ten terrorist threats - this list is known as the threat matrix."

We here at FR are trying to be in conjunction with the daily reports around the world that involve threats. We try to provide a storehouse of information that takes hours of research.

Threat Matrix - Daily Terrorism Threat
Details show extent of terror plot against U.S.
Full Story

We now know more about an alleged attack that triggered an increased national threat level last summer.

That's when U.S. officials said they had uncovered a plot targeting financial institutions. The plot involved bombs, banks and British nationals.

The detail was startling, the targets enormous. They included financial buildings in Washington, New York and New Jersey.

Oops - In the first paragraph "in mass" should have read "en masse."

Bolivia - On 13 May 2005, unidentified suspects threw dynamite from a passing vehicle at a car that was parked at the headquarters of the Brazilian oil company Petrobras in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, damaging the vehicle.

According to reports, the self-proclaimed Patriotic Bloc claimed responsibility and warned of future attacks. The group is reportedly demanding full government control over the country's oil and gas reserves.

South Korea - Approximately 4,000 protesters clashed with anti-riot police officers near a U.S. air force base in Gwangju, located approximately 200 mi/320 km south of Seoul, on 16 May 2005. Protesters burned U.S. flags and attempted to break into the base, damaging parts of the fence that surrounds the facility. Police officers fired water cannon to disperse the demonstrators.

The demonstration was to protest U.S. plans to deploy new missiles in South Korea, following the deployment of Patriot missiles to the base in November 2004.

Uzbekistan - The situation in eastern Uzbekistan remains tense and confusing. Various reports have emerged indicating that the unrest has spread beyond the town of Andijan, but due to restrictions imposed by the government, these reports cannot be verified. Although the government claimed on 13 May that it had brought the unrest under control in Andijan, there are reports of sporadic fighting in the city on 16 May.

Meanwhile, military troops sealed off the town of Korasuv (also spelled Karasu) after local residents seized control from government officials, according to reports on 16 May 2005. Troops have set up checkpoints on the roads leading to Korasuv, and there is currently limited media coverage from the sealed city.

A local human rights activist claimed that government troops killed approximately 200 protesters on 14 May in the town of Pakhtabad, located approximately 20 mi/30 km northeast of Andijan. This claim could not be verified. Reports continue to state that there has been significant loss of life in the area due to clashes between government forces and protesters.

The latest media reports state that at least eight Uzbek soldiers and more than 500 Uzbek protesters were killed due to fighting in Andijan. In addition there have been unverified reports by residents that there was fighting in the border village of Tefekosh between armed men and government forces.

President Islam Karimov has blamed the outlawed Islamic group Hizb-ut-Tahrir, a self-proclaimed peaceful organization, for the unrest that led to the violence. Most indications are that this assertion is merely an effort to shift blame and that the protests are self-sustaining.

The violence generated a significant wave of refugees heading for the borders with the Kyrgyz Republic, possibly for the southern Kyrgyz cities of Osh and Jalal-Abad, and they appear to have been let through. There is no indication that the popular unrest has support in Tashkent, the capital, but the situation is unusual enough that this remains a potential concern and as such could erupt with little warning.

On 14 May, the U.S. Embassy in Tashkent updated its Warden Message noting that travel in the affected area was still restricted and that U.S. citizens should remain in their residences.

Sweden - On 16 May 2005, a fire erupted on a subway train during the morning rush hour in northwestern Stockholm forcing the evacuation of a train station and sending at least 12 people to the hospital.

Police officials state that it was likely that the fire was started deliberately and that train riders had heard two small explosions before the train had entered Rinkeby station. While the fire severely damaged the last train car and the subway platform, it did not spread to other train cars. Forensic experts are due to examine the train later on the afternoon of 16 May

Indonesia - On 13 May 2005, the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta issued a Warden Message that reads as follows:
"The U.S. Embassy and the U.S. Consulate General wish to alert all American citizens in Indonesia to the possibility that public demonstrations of anti-American sentiment could occur in the next few days as a result of news reports of an alleged incident at Guantanamo prison. Americans should be aware that demonstrations could occur on short notice anywhere in Indonesia, especially in large cities and regional capitals. Any demonstration has the potential to turn violent.

The Embassy has received reports that student groups visited several hotels in Makassar, South Sulawesi on May 13 seeking information about foreign guests..."

Info on Lewis Attiyatullah:

SNIP:
Al-Faqih is head of the non-governmental organization Movement for Islamic Reform in Arabia (MIRA). Extremists utilize a website controlled by al-Faqih and MIRA to post al Qaida-related statements and images. While MIRA has issued disclaimers warning users to not attribute postings on MIRA message boards to al Qaida, information available to the U.S. and UK Governments shows that the messages are intended to provide ideological and financial support to al-Qaida affiliated networks and potential recruits.

AQ-affiliated author, Lewis Attiyatullah, whose statements have been published on MIRA's website, has been directly associated with Al-Faqih for several years.

There are just way too many international hot spots, and potential hot spots at the moment. Groups of students in Indonesia checking up on foreign hotel guests seems really creepy.

Oh brother! They are saying in that first post that the jihadis are being set up at the check points -- with bombs being purposely secreted in muslim's auto, etc., by Israelis and then the innocent muslims are blamed! Yeah. Ok.

Sounds like they are fishing for Newzweak to pick up the story....?
